Blake0567 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 I am beginning to look into upgrading my trucks cam. I plan on upgrading the valve springs as well. My questions are, what is the stock cam in my 5.3 currently, and as far as tuning goes I would like to learn, so is there any good resources out there to help me learn?
CamGTP Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 To be honest, learning on the most advanced computer in the V8 platform that we have access to as your first go around with tuning is going to a huge learning curve. I highly suggest you learn on it while it's stock, then maybe venture into a modded engine. If you were around 6-10 years ago when the 99-07 body style was the most popular to mod, then the 07-13 body style. You would have seen the advancements in technology and changes in the calibrations which would help you understand some of the logic behind the direct injection controllers in the 14-18 trucks. There are tuning courses you can take and video's/books you can buy. Greg Banish has good books and video dvd's you can purchased called "Calibrated success". I'm sure you've done some reading but there is a little more to a cam swap that just the cam and valve springs. You'll be needing new lifters, pushrods, parts to remove and delete the AFM/DoD system. These trucks have variable valve timing too, so a cam would need that or it could be deleted as well. Head gaskets, head bolts and all that other jazz too.
