Using truck jack to change travel trailer tire

Recommended Posts

Anyone used the jack that came with the truck on the axle of a travel trailer to change a flat tire? It seems like the truck jack has a cup in it to fit the round rear axle. I have used it on the rear axle of my truck with no issues. Just curious. Would be nice not to have to bring a big floor jack along as out TT is only 3500 lbs single axle.

My only concern is if you blow out a tire on a single axle, and the axle is sloping towards the blown tire, would the truck jack be able to get in their to lift the axle up? Lots of experience jacking up vehicles, no experience with Travel trailers.

Thanks

Let the air out of your trailer tire and check. If it isn't enough, roll the trailer ahead on a chunk of 2x6 and try again. Those jacks are garbage anyway, if you have a storage on your travel trailer, it would be a good place to store a proper jack, breaker bar and socket. A small 5ton bottle jack is compact and you can do a lot more with them than a scissor jack or OEM "bottle jack", and you wont have to go insane unloading kids or gear from the backseat to unscrew the OEM jack nut off the 1foot length of threads they had to put in there.. My work trucks back seat is only for tools, drill, jacks, pipe wrenches, saw/hatchet, mechanics wire, fuses, winches, chain/straps etc. Good idea to fill a bin with tools when you head out on an adventure, it sucks not being able to get out of a jam when you need to.

I don't see why it wouldn't work on your trailer axle in an emergency.

See this old thread with photos after I did some experimenting with the "fancy" OEM jack on my 2015.

Your signature says you drive a 2016, even though you posted this in the T1 forum. I don't know if the new truck model has made any changes compared to the jack I have.

I think I will probably just throw my small floor jack in the truck after all. Sure would be nice to save the space and weight in the bed and not bring it though
