2016 power steering loss

So my family and I took a 500 mile trip to Michigan over the weekend and the battery went dead. No big deal I purchased one, changed it went to leave and I no longer have power steering. I get the display message about power steering drive with care but it’s all could do to move it.  Thanks to a great friend that drove 16hrs round trip brought his truck and a trailer and got us back home!  
anyone else seen or heard of this? GM is acting like I done something wrong.

There are some post about that.
Basically the steering has to relearn. But also and as stupid as this sounds the wheel/tires need to be straight I mean look at wheels and the tires and the dic and make sure it says zero. There where tuner issues where after a dead battery or just a software flash same message came up.

Not sure if it’ll work on these, but after disconnecting the battery on my X3, the steering angle sensor needs to be recalibrated, or the AWD binds and nuclear fallout ensues; the method on that old German is to turn the wheel lock to lock a few times. Anyone know if that’s applicable to these trucks?
