2005 Silverado tachometer

Tachometer makes a humming sound similar to tire noise.  The tack gives strange readings and the humming sound increases when I accelerate.  Doesn't seem to affect the truck's performance at all as I have driven the vehicle numerous times since the humming started. Took to garage and told that it was tire noise and they rotated the tires.  Help.  Don't want to make the problem worse by continuing to drive the truck.

Is the mechanic a total moron?  The tach making a noise would be trivial to determine that it's not a problem with tires.

Anyway, for the GMT800 trucks, it's not unusual for the stepper motors running the gauges to fail.  You can replace it yourself if you have basic disassembly & soldering skills, or you can send it to any number of places for them to fix it for you.  If you send it out, you may also want to get all the bulbs replaced at the same time (as they are also soldered onto the IP circuit board).
