Driver Information Center Buttons Not working

I recently replaced the steering box on my 2005 Suburban. I did not disconnect the battery, even though I read somewhere that you should. In order to put the upper steering shaft, I had to hit it (not real hard) with a hammer. After everything was done, the service air bag light was on and the buttons on the DIC didn't work. The display works, but not the buttons. The one fuse I could find for the DIC is fine, can't find any others. Couldn't find a relay for the DIC either.

I have checked several forums but could not find any answers.

Any suggestions? I'd rather not take it to a dealer.

You probably messed up the clock spring. There is no fixing that. It will have to be replaced.

While I can't say with certainty yes or no, the symptoms point to that. Especially the airbag warning. You could check up and down the shaft to include from clock spring in the steering wheel area down looking at any connectors reseating each and/or cleaning all contacts. The only thing that I believe is attached to the shaft is the clock spring.

If you didn't tie off the steering wheel so it couldn't rotate when disconnected from the steering box, it may have rotated too far in one direction or the other when it was disconnected (or the new steering box was "steered" differently than the one you took out, so when assembled and you turn the wheel one way, it wrecked the clock spring)...
