I was going to pull the EGR out of my mothers 03 Tahoe to see if that is my problem...and

there isn't one!? How did they do that? Better yet, did they do that b/c ther were porblematic? Any way to test one of these things?

EGR valves have been around since the 60s. The 2003 models, I think, were the first to not really need the things due to improved methods and evolving emission computer programming.

2002 first year. No more 70K mile intake passages carbon scraping .

Care to elaborate? Funny you saqy 70k, I am at 70,400 miles and my SES light just came on with the error P0404 "Malfunction exists in exhaust gas recirculation"

Could this carbon buildup cause my SES light? If so or regardless...Whats the best way to clean this build-up? Is it good to scrape it, and all the crap goes down those little holes.

Any suggestions?

My cars of past, the EGR codes start flashing around 70K. The valve and solenoid always operated fine, but the passages were clogged with carbon. I still replaced the valve an solenoid anyways due to age. But all that carbon needs to be cleaned out.

I just saw a good example this weekend on Two Guys Garage. It was a Ford Exploder 5.0 that had been throwing codes but finally got worked on because it died in flight. The in flight problem was a fuel pump relay, common to the Ford. The Codes was faulty EGR operation. They showed the Throttle body and the interior side was caked with carbon as well as the intake passages.

The best way is to remove the intake. Short of that maybe a very high power shop vac while you're scraping. I never tried it, I always went through the intake removal/install hassle. On TB's (like they mentioned in the show) is not to scrape or use any solvent stronger than mineral spirits.
