Drill those NMO holes.  Never seen it hurt trucks valve.  mine has less than 10k.

I would mount the antenna off the frame down low and come off insulator mount off the stake hole to hold it tight.  Stake hole not a great ground for Screwdriver antennas.  Make sure coils is above the body

I am thinking about mounting an IC-7100 or 5100 in my 17 5.3 SLT with captains chairs. I'm leaning heavily on the 7100 as it'll probably be my only rig until we finish building the house.  I'd like to mount the head in as clean a manner as possible, ideally utilizing the huge "bucket" in the console just forward of the cup holders.  Alternatively a mod to the little pencil trays just in front of the aux switches would be nice as well.  Any pics of something like this?  

 

Other radio suggestions welcome as well...loyal to ICOM for some reason - probably because my uncle swore by them.

I originally got the one for the drivers side but it faces straight back. Made viewing the screen nearly impossible.

It’s not permanent either. Clips on and off for those times you need more room or whatever.

i know this thread is old but i have a question i hope someone can answer.  Did anyone notice a difference in reception when they upgraded to this model? I removed my icom radio and antenna from my 17' Silverado that worked flawless and installed on my 20' in the same fashion.  I have noticed that my reception is horrible with this truck?  anyone experience this or am I on my own? Really sucks. Just baffles me it would be that much of a difference.

So many computers on these trucks. My radio is much quieter with the truck OFF.

i am able to transmit much farther than i can receive now.  I have had antenna checked and it was good.  just really aggravating. going to try and hook everything up in a buddies truck this week and see how it does.  That way i will see if it is something with the truck

Because the radio body is semi-enclosed by the sub and the seat above it I have a MLS-200M10 external speaker mounted near the sub toward the jack. 

I originally tried mounting the mounting bracket for the head unit using double-sided tape but it would only hold for a few days.  I ended up sliding off the bottom piece and drilling mounting holes and screwed the mounting bracket to it using backing washers. I had to shave the center tab and ream out the slot on the dash but it slid back in perfectly. 

The only concession is that I'm careful to grip the head to support it when I turn it on or off so as not to put too much stress on the mount. 

 

I hope I uploaded all 3 pictures correctly showing the radio head and mic and the NMO fender bracket. 

 

 

 

Hi, on the  cable run through the firewall  did you drill a hole?  or was there gm firewall grommet you used?
