Water Pump relocated

I had a 2017 Chevy SIlverado work truck with 4.3 and have a 2018 Sierra with 5.3 (and probably 6.2) and am wondering why GM relocated the water pump from the from of the engine to the driver side of the engine.  On the 2019 and newer the 5.3 (probably 6.2) have the water pump back in the front of the engine.

All comes down to revisions and packaging that is required.

 

The T1 trucks were a completely new body style with different packaging requirements up front. Moving the water pump back to the middle can help if there wasn't enough room for it hanging off on the drivers side.
