The "Flapper Valve" is an Exhaust System Adaptive Valve

It mitigates undesirable low-frequency exhaust noise that results when automakers use fuel-saving technologies such as cylinder deactivation and multispeed transmissions. The Exhaust System Adaptive Valve is a spring-loaded, self-regulating valve that presents exhaust gas flows with a variable restriction, suppressing low-frequency acoustic energy. This innovation allows automakers to extend the range of the cylinder-deactivation mode, further improving fuel economy.
