cv boot leaking at the boot, fix asap or can i wait?

Recommended Posts

hello, looking to get some input. stopped by for a oil change as im on the road rn, and the tech pointed that he noticed a small leak at the cv joint where the clamp is. the other cv axle seems completely fine. i took some pics and wanted some input. im going to be driving about 1000 miles more until im back home, and then once im home ill look at getting it repaired/fixed.

do you think this is a situation where i have to get it fixed asap? or should i be fine getting it fixed once im back home?

thanks!

Assuming you are going for a nice highway drive, and not doing off-roading...

If it's just leaking on the large, smoother part where the clamp is, I would suggest cleaning it (as in, wipe off the dirt/grease with a rag, don't use a spray cleaner that may get inside the boot) and then wrapping some duct tape around it to minimize dirt getting inside.

If it's in the bellow's portion, then carefully wipe off the grease/dirt (as it's much easier to drive that dirt into any crack in the boot), and maybe put some rtv over the crack to reduce dirt getting in (and don't force the rtv into the boot, you don't want anything inside it).

Then when you get home, change the boot (cheaper, but labor intensive and a dirty process), or change the whole shaft out (with either a new or a used one).
