To Buy or Not!?

Today at lunch I stumbed upon a set of used 20" American Racing Pirahna wheels for $1,250 which is probably negotiable a little. They come covered in 305/50/20 Nitto NT 404 tires, probably 75% or better tread. The shop I found them at went ahead and installed one to check fit, and give me a better idea what they would look like installed.

They are some fat ole tires...hehe, but I kinda like'm that way. After checking them under NO stress they DO NOT rub; however, they are very close when cranked to the max so I would have to believe they will probably rub when I'm turning sharp and hitting a bump (like going up a driveway). But I think I can take that away by doing a 2" spacer lift in the front to level out the truck, which I had thought about doing anyway.

Below are the pictures they snapped. Keep in mind it was about 5:30pm central time when these got snapped (almost dark) so they kinda look crappy, but give a good enough idea. Just hoping to get some more opinions before I plunk down the cash. Originally I was looking at some different wheels, but these are kinda growing on me, especially considering the price.

Fire away and tell me what ya'll think?

Str8 pimpin....If I were you (and had the cabbage) I would get them....I would have them come down in price a bit though. There is a place down the road that sells packages like that brand new for that price.

Aren't you in OK?

Woah...brand new for the same price!? For 20's and the rubber!?!?!?! Yes, I'm in OK up near Tulsa. By all means, shoot me the name and number of the place and I'll use them as a tool to negotiate, and if they won't budge then I'll just buy a new set there.

There is a place on the south side of Norman that always has smokin deals on wheel/tire combos. Most of the ones I see are around $1200-$1500 on 18" and 20" wheels. I don't know about the wheel brands, but they always have some pretty cool looking ones in there.

He!!, they have 16" wheel/tire combos in the $700 price range....I almost paid that for my tires alone!!

Name of it is: LWM Pickup Accessories

405-360-7998

1-800-259-5843

They will wheel and deal (pun intentional) on stuff. And if they don't carry it, they can probably get it....Or so they say.

Pretty good group of guys in there too, most of them drive GM's

Pretty much everyone I know goes there for any type truck accessory.

Hey man, I really appreciate it!!:D

I will give the guys a holler in the morning and see what they have to say. Also, after having my eyes opened, I did find some on eBay. They were only $800 delivered to my doorstep, insured and BRAND NEW. Of course, tires were extra but my buddy at the local Hesselbein can hook me up good on them.

Hehe, I wonder if the 4wd shop I saw them at knew they could be had so cheap. I'm sure they didn't pay much as one of their customers that lifted their Yukon traded them in on his new stuff. Either way, they will get a rude awakening. I hope I can make it work though.

Again, thanks!!!

Well I talked to both shops this morning. The shop down by Norman confirmed they do have some American Eagle wheel sets for the $1295 range, which comes wrapped in Goodyear Eagle GT II rubber which I don't particulary care for much. Without the Goodyear rubber I can pick the rims up for $795. Not too bad of a deal.

That in mind I called my local shop back to try to work a better deal. He said he'd take $1000 cash for them, but I might be able to get him to $900. But I dunno, still seems like he should be a little lower. But he claims the Nitto NT 404 tires are $270/each. On tirerack.com they show up as $230, plus shipping and mounting so yeah that might be close. Either way, everything is used. Just don't know if I can live with $900 when for just a little more I can get a set of brand new wheels, and you use my buddy at Hesselbein to get some Toyo's for cheap.

Maybe I'm crazy...but I'm just not ready to leap yet. What do ya'll think? Also, what is a set of stock 16" wheels (the purty ones) wrapped in Toyo Open Country AT 265/75/16 rubber worth on the market? Tires only have about 5000 miles on them, and I still have the receipt where I just bought them a month or so ago.

Got any pics of the ones you want to sell? The Blazer is in need of new meats....I bet you could get $22.50 out of me for them

Did you ask LWM about the Toyos? I have seen them in there on package deals, same with the Yokohamas (Street tires). Or did you just ask what he had on the floor. Whenever I have been in there, he says that he can put together just about any package of wheels and tires.

If you are set on the Nittos, Tires Plus (Hibdons) chains can get them, and will play price war beatdown with anyone (and usually win), and they will even warranty any tire.....Nittos do not have any type warranty from the factory. Of course, the warranty will cost ya, unless you can get them to throw it in.

They are very good at customer service. I have seen them take a loss on a set of tires just to retain a customer. Lifetime rotate/balance for free etc.

Keep in mind that if you buy tires and rims separately it can cost up to $100 just to get them mounted and balanced. Also, $1,250 for 20's and tires is a really good deal. Granted they are used and a pretty common wheel, but still, buy them and then try to sell them for $1,500. I'm curious, are the wheels chrome or polished?

I like the design, but they're too big IMHO. I'm a "show me some sidewall" type of guy. Big wheels are for kids. Anything bigger than 17-18" is too big for my likes. I may be old school, but those big a$$ wheels just look silly to me. I'd shop around some more if I were you.

...you asked!

Hehe, you just scared me too. Either I'm gett'n too old or.... :D

In regards to my stock wheels and the Toyo's, I took a few pics this morning. I was gonna try to be a graphic artist and transpose the wheels and this and that. It didn't work, but maybe these will be beneficial anyhow. I am providing a link due to the size.

As far as the tires on the 20" rims goes....no I am not stuck on Nitto's. Matter of fact I have a buddy that works at Hesselbein and can get a purty good discount on Toyo's. The last "performance" tire I had was on my Vette back about 8 years ago when BFG Comp T/A's were all the rage and the cool thing was "Z" rated tires. I don't know which is better, but my buddy works at Hesselbein which sells Toyo's and I can get a nice discount on them. And since I got the connection at the tire shop, I'm not too worried about the extra cost of getting them mounted and balanced if I purchase the components separately. Hehe, I didn't pay for it last time and I don't expect to again.

You really think I could sell them for $1500? I wasn't that confident, but maybe so. Also, they are the "polished" version, not the chrome ones. That brings their total value down. Actually I kind of liked the polished version better than the chrome, but nonetheless, it's a $$ thing I got to look at.

Hehe, and no offense taken VictoryRed...I did ask for it!! :flag: I like seeing some sidewall myself and had thought about going with either a 55 or 60 sidewall if I buy the components separately later. Of course, I'll have to go a little skinner as they don't make 305's (12") in a 55 or 60, and if they did it wouldn't fit anyhow. Still I liked how they filled up the wells...they looked nice. But yeah, I don't want a "kiddiemobile" either. Rather I like that performance look where it looks mean and touch and F-A-S-T.

Thanks for the honest input guys. Feel free to fire away more, if you like.

Although I'm young, 20's look a lot better on a new truck (especially a 2wd) than a set of 17's or 16's. Also, when younger people see older people with bigger rims and nice looking trucks (without running boards and crap like that) it's pretty cool. Ok, honestly, that style of wheel isn't my favorite, but I will say those rims look a lot better on your truck than the stock wheels, and a lot better than some smaller rims would look. Plus, the price is cheaper than a new set of smaller rims and tires would cost. I say buy them, you can't go wrong.
