PF59 Oil filter differences

Recommended Posts

Ok I got a bunch of oil filters at walmart a few yrs back. I am down to 1 so i ordered a 12 pack no not this

Both types are PF59 AC Delco (the new ones have a recycle symbol on them) same part number on both labels also

Comparing the 2 they look different.

1. The gasket on the new one is thicker

2. The little divits (holes) in the top had 5 in the old one and 6 in the new one

3. You can see inside (actual filter area) easier on the new ones.

Just wondering if anyone had any comments. I know it was discussed awhile back

I recently cup open a bunch of filters for use on another forum www.bobistheoilguy.com .

One on the filters that I cut open was the PF44. I too noticed differences in the AC filters. I thinky they might have changed manufacturers. The antidrainback valve was better on the old AC's. The filter itself didn't look as good either. The totals square inches of filtering material is down slightly too. What surprised me the most was that I found rust in the filter that I cut open. I only had the filter for one day before I cut it open. I concluded from the filters that I cut open that the best filter in the $4-$6 range are Baldwin, Hastings premium or Wix. For now I am going to stay away from AC

K&N or Mobil-1 filter may be better but they run $10 Plus per filter.

AcDelco PF44 cost was $5.75 from the dealership. If you buy a case of 12 from partszoneonline you can get them for under $3.00 each.

I was totally shocked to find RUST inside the filter when I opened it up!!!

It is amazing what you can learn about oil and all that other great lubrication and filter stuff over there on bobistheoilguy. That forum has grown fast since I found it a year ago.

I also noticed a difference in the AC filter I bought at Auto Zone and the one the dealer installed on our Venture when we had the head work done. It looked like from what I could tell the one I got from Auto Zone was made in Mexico. It had pore markings on it, hard to read and not clear like on the dealer filter. Sad to think that things in life are going to the lowest bidder so to speak, so companies can save a buck.

Great, now I'm starting to wonder about the stealer PF59 I'm using. Next spring, had better find my oil filter cutter and check the old filter.

I bought a few PF44's that K-mart was closing out, but they look a little different from the one Ross T cut open.

Mine have only five outlet holes arranged around the large center inlet hole instead of six like the one shown. There are six spot welds, which seems to be the same number as in Ross T’s photo, though it’s hard to tell for sure.

There is a stamped number -- 9286 -- near the inlet hole. Any idea what these numbers mean? Maybe just a production run reference?

Ross, does your filter have a stamped number on it?

TIA

I am thinking that you have one of the better old pf44's. I will check for the stamps when I get home. What color was the antidrainback valve on yours? Black or orange? It the rubber type thing below the inlet holes.

Why stop at the PF44? The UPF44 is the synthetic version of the PF44. Good thing I had a case left from my Vette.... these cost about $8 each and filter MUCH better than the PF44....

Hi Ross T :

The antidrainback valve - just inside the 5 outer drain holes - is black.

I bought the filters almost two years ago.

Ahhh, ya gotta love a nice oil filter discussion!! I know I do.

OK, here's one for ya... I want a LONGER oil filter. Like those ones on some farm applications I see at the local Farm-n-Fleet stores. I have a 2001 K2500 'Burban with the 6.0L and I'm having a beeotch of a time finding a longer substitute for the original.

Have any of y'all seen or know of a longer oil filter that will fit the 6.0L engines? I have plenty of room to grow with a filter and I like dragging the oil changes out to 6k+ miles so a longer filter would make me very happy since my Blackstone reports show the Purolater oil filter starting to become ineffective before then.

(Ross, I also like that Llama/Alpaca/Sheep/Slug mutant animal you got.)

Many thanks!!

After considerable reading on Bob Is The Oil Guy and other sites, I believe that AC has multiple manufacturers of the PF-59. The ones I get at the local Chevy dealer and some parts stores are made by Delphi. These have 5 holes. The ones I've seen at K-Mart and AutoZone have 6 holes, and are identical in construction to the STP/Bosch filters made by Champion Labs. The prevailing opinion seems to be that the real Delphi ones are better made.

None, according to a Cadillac engineer. The PF 58, 59, and new Caddy filters are all the same. Loose the anti-drainback idea, they all have that.

Have a great one!

Me too! On the Classic 350, you could get commercial oil filters almost 2 feet long.

I think I'll have to invest in a remote dual main/bypass filter head from Amsoil. I want to keep this truck forever and might as well start using a bypass filter already to keep the oil spotless.

Gulf Coast Filters also makes an impressive bypass filter system.

I just started using a Spinner II centrifugal oil filter on one of my commercial trucks, but you need air pressure to make them work. I'm not going to bother with rigging up air pressure on a LD truck, so I'll try a bypass filter first.

Jayman,

What is your take on the Motor Guard bypass oil filter system? Not a bad idea and tolet paper is really easy to get not to mention cheap. Can be messy to change out the filter.

So what do ya think? :P

So what do ya think?

One of my uncle's, a farmer, used a similar type of bypass filter on an old MF combine in the early 70's. That old combine ran forever and the oil stayed clean.

Although there is a lot of pressure drop, it IS a bypass filter, right? So no big deal, the goal is to microfilter a fraction of the total oil volume at any time.

I've browsed BITOG and many report very good results with the MotorGuard bypass filter system. You're right, it is an awful mess to change, but how often do you have to do that?

For the ultimate in mess/stench, try changing a large diesel fuel filter element. You can wash your hands 20 times with laundry detergent and the cat STILL runs away from you!

However, with modern emissions controls and fuel blends, especially ethanol in gasoline motors, I'm not too sure how toilet paper filters would hold up. It seems these filters had their hayday, and they were outstanding, but I'm not too sure if that's relavent today.

I have Gulf Coast filters on most of my commercial equipment as a lot of the locals running similar equipment have reported excellent results. I also have excellent results and haven't changed the oil in any of the equipment, UOA reports back as good even after 4 years.

More in my area are starting to use the Amsoil BMK bypass system with BE filters on heavy equipment, or the dual remote combination filter head with both Amsoil SDF main filter and Amsoil BE bypass filter on lighter equipment (More convenient).

I'm sold on spin-on filters just because they're one heck of a lot neater to change. The Amsoil SDF and BE filters do the job, are reasonably priced for what they offer, and give peace of mind. Hope this helps!
