Mike here , new to the forum. I recently replaced my 2001 1500 with 2019 LT. Boy that was hard to do. That truck was so good. But promised it to my grandson when he was like 12 and he remembered.

Anyway I lost one of my remotes and ordered new one from auto locksmith. He could not get it to program. Yes I am trying to save a few bucks. The dealer charge for this is well...a lot.  Has anyone tried doing this yourself? I suspect the problem was he did not cut the new blank "key"  (which fits door key slot) and is part of the programming process. I do have another remote with cut blade. I wonder if I can program the new remote using my old key. Of course I need to get that key blade cut at some point. Does the new remote need a cut blade in it to work? I see some videos but never 100% sure their for my truck. Curious what you might know.

Thanks,

Mike

With my 2020 I just followed the owners manual, but I did have both key fobs. I think there is a procedure in there that addresses having just one fob but it takes a little bit of time. As far as I can tell the key has nothing to do with fob programming. After I programmed my new fobs it was a few days of using them before I got the keys cut. The keys are just metal no electronics in them.
