I was under my truck today and noticed that the spare tire on my truck, although full size, is actually a temporary tire.  What tipped me off was the tread depth was about half the depth of a new tire...  Anything to save a buck.

Like donut tires, or any other spare, it is meant to be used for a short amount of time. No point in having you pay for an all terrain tire you will rarely use, if at all.

Even if the tire was the same, it’s not like they ever gave you a rim that matches the others. Save for the steel work truck wheels of years ago.

I think it's narrower and saves weight too, which saves MPG's. Anything for that 1/100 of a MPG. Add that to the other $5k worth of tech, i.e., grill shudders, DFM/AFM, start stop, air dams, etc., etc., and it saves a whole 1 mpg (I don't really know how much it saves, I'm just ranting).

 

I think trucks were the last vehicles to get away from a true "spare tire" and adopt an emergency, temporary-use-only, type tire.

 

All that said, (which amounts to nothing), I don't think many people would want a true spare tire with matching wheel and tire. To properly utilize it would require a 5 wheel/tire rotation. Everyone thinks they're going to do a proper rotation but in reality many don't and the matching spare rarely/never gets used. I see Jeep Wranglers all the time with their matching mud tire and fancy wheel mounted on the back with 0 miles on it, while the 4 on the ground are worn out (all that mall crawling is hard on mudders).

As long as you are under there, might as well drop the spare tire down and grease up the pulley and mechanism so it works when you need it to.
