I am trying to find out how to remove the cv axles on these trucks.  Mine is a 2020 and it looks like it could be easy.  Do you just remove axle nut and push through hub and then use a slide hammer to get it out of the differential case?   Is there anything else? Looks like older trucks you removed bolts on the inner joint side and pull right out but mine doesnt have any bolts.  I may end up taking off if its as easy as it sounds to get my cv boot clamps on tight and right or even replace the cv's if needed.

 

Do I have to undo control arm or anything?

Unless I missed it I didnt see anything in those instructions showing how to remove it.  It only showed the axle nut removed and the outer part pulled through hub which I believe is the easy part but it doesnt show anything for the inner cv connection to differential.

Im missing it I guess.  I see the outer cv is bolted with the axle nut and the differential is bolted to the truck but nothing about the inner axle.  All I know is to take the axle nut off and push axle through hub then use a slide hammer for the inner because i dont see any bolts holding it on like the older models.

Removal

Warning: To prevent personal injury and/or component damage, do not allow the weight of the vehicle to load the front wheels, or attempt to operate the vehicle, when the wheel drive shaft(s) or wheel drive shaft nut(s) are removed. To do so may cause the inner bearing race to separate, resulting in damage to brake and suspension components and loss of vehicle control.
Caution: DO NOT use air tools to remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Damage to the wheel drive shaft threads could occur. Use hand tools only.
Note: It is not necessary to completely disassemble the steering knuckle. Only perform the steps necessary to remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
Caution: Wheel drive shaft boots, seals and clamps should be protected from sharp objects any time service is performed on or near the wheel drive shaft(s). Damage to the boot(s), the seal(s) or the clamp(s) may cause lubricant to leak from the joint and lead to increased noise and possible failure of the wheel drive shaft.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  2. Underbody Skid Shield (2) » Remove — Underbody Skid Shield Replacement
  3. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
  4. Have an assistant apply the brakes.
  5. Front Wheel Drive Shaft Nut (1) » Remove
  6. Front Wheel Brake Rotor » Remove — Front Brake Rotor Replacement
  7. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle as an assembly.
  8. Using a suitable, flat bladed tool (1), release the front wheel drive half shaft (2) from the front differential carrier.

thanks man.  It seems fairly easy to do.  shafts are only about $130 from what i see if one did get messed up.  

 

Wasnt able to open the links for instructions to some of the items but should be able to do with out.  Also directions call to remove skid plate on all level kit instructions but didnt do mine and not sure why you would need to.

I believe the skid plate removal was only for the use of the pry bar.  You get a better angle advantage with the skid plate removed.

I see this is an old thread, but reading through the instructions is also says to pull and replace the inner drive shaft as well.  Has anyone done this/know if it is OK to only replace the CV axle?

Hello, I'm Allan and new here. I stumbled across your post. This is the only diagram directions of any kind I've found for a 2019 and up for axle removal. Does anyone here know how to take the front axle apart to install a cv boot on the new 2019 and up Silverado? I have mine out and the old boot cut away but don't see the snap ring that the previous generation has. So I was hoping someone somewhere had already ran across this issue?

    • I went another direction after losing a trailer tire, thanks to not being able to access air at ANY of the 5 gas stations and garages I stopped at prior, with a Toyota Tacoma onboard, 50 miles from the Canadian border.
