Crew Cab vs Extended Cab

Is the rear seating in the Silverado 1500 Extended Cab comfortable enough for occasional use by adults, on 1-2 hour trips, or is a Crew Cab superior enough to justify the higher purchase price? Any other comments you want to make on the pros/cons of either cab configuration are welcome.

The crew cab definitely is nicer, but not that much nicer if you know what I mean. With the four door ext. cab now, it is pretty nice. The ext. cab also has more room under the seat and the truck is easier to park, unless you have a long box. I think the ext cab GM is just as big as the new crew cab Dodges. The only downfall to the ext. cab I see is the suicide doors, being the front doors have to open first. The only other thing is sometimes the ext. cab doors and windows sometimes leak. This doesn't happen on a crew cab. All in all, I say if it's occasional use of the back seat, I recommend the ext. cab. That's just my opinion.

i am 6 feet even and have sat behind a 6 foot driver in my Ext. cab. I did fit but i had to have my legs spread apart. It is not what i would call comfortable but i like the shorter overall length in parking lot situtions and i dont have people in the back very often.

I am 5'11", probably about 215 lbs. I rode in the back of my ext cab truck to a friend's house 35-40 minutes away... my wife drove, because my friend and his wife were riding with us and his wife is pregnant so we let her sit up front while the men rode in the back. Total time spent in the back round trip was 70-80 minutes. I was not at all uncomfortable. My friend sitting in the back next to me is a stocky build, 5'8" and also over 200 lbs. He never once mentioned being uncomfortable.

I think ext cab is fine for a 1hr trip, but that depends on the size of the people that will be riding back there.

When I compared the extended cab Chevy to the Quad cab Dodge I did not find much advantage with the Dodge. Aside from the convenience of the doors of course. I seem to recall that the seatback angle was actually worse in the back of the Dodge. I have had four people in my truck many times for trips up to 2 hours or so. As long as you don't need to have one 6 footer behind another it's livable. I am 6'2" and my 5'4" mom in the seat behind me was not an issue. My GF is 5'0" and with my 5'11" dad in the seat behind her there was enough room. No complaints. If I was driving 4-up all the time I woild consider a crew cab, but for occassional rear seat use I think the extended is a better compromise.

I agree with everyone else. Having the extended cab myself, I've ridden in both the front and back and it's not a problem for short (3 hrs or less) trips. My use is pretty much exactly like you described ... only a 3rd or 4th passenger occasionally and even then its not for any length of time. Unless there's some other reason you'd prefer the crew cab, I'd recommend the ext.

I take my parents and their neighbors out shopping and whatnot pretty often in the back of my 3 door 99 and it's not bad. I'd say stick with the ext if you're only doing short trips.

I had a '00 excab and traded it for my '01 crewcab. The extra room is great!!! You have a full rear bench with lots of leg room and the seatback is more reclined.

If you ask anyone who has ridden in the back of both, then they will 100% agree that they would rather ride in the crewcab...

If I had the cash and the chance to do it over, I'd go with the crew...The extended works for me now, but I could probably get more use with the crew...it all really depends on your passenger needs and the length of any driving you may do. I'm also not sure what the price difference is, thus my suggestion of the ext in my original reply.

The way I see it is, if you're already gonna get an extended cab, you might as well just buy a crew cab, it's really not gonna be a whole hell of a lot harder ot park

My Ext Cab is OK with folks in the back for shorter trips. We usually take my truck to lunch at work and load it up with 5 folks, 3 in the back. It is only OK for these short trips. Even my girls, 5 and 7 have started to run out of room back there. Personally, I would not want to face a long trip in the back seat.

If I was buying a new truck today, I would opt for the crew cab short box...

After reading everyones comments it reaffirms my belief that GM will slowly fade out nearly all ext cab models. They have already done it in the 3/4 ton, the 1/2 ton is get a crew and if available with a 6'5" bed the ext cab would go.

Don't get me wrong ext cabs have come a long way since my Dad's '94 but the ease of entry/exit is all that has improved. The next truck I will buy will be a crew as it will be family truck with long camping trips so the added space is worth the price, get th crew.

We chose the extended cab over the CC because we often tow both a 5th wheel trailer and a boat. The CC, being longer, would have crowded the length limits in several states. Also the shorter wheelbase makes trailer maneuvering easier. We don't often haul back-seat passengers, but the rear seat is comfortable for two adults.
