The problem I have had with this one, is once it crushes the can, it can't close anymore and then just spins on the can.  The strap wrench just keeps getting tighter as the can collapses.

This saga is now finally over for me!!

 

Nick you are exactly correct, it just chewed up and crushed the filter until it was too small to grab anymore.

 

The best advice came from CamGTP as the three finger jaw type I used was like a vise and turned that damn filter without crushing a full 2 1/2 turns before it came loose from the mating surface!!!  (It's only supposed to be 3/4 of a turn)
