I’ve been reading a lot on the Bilstein 5100’s and one thing I haven’t seen much of is what people are actually getting height wise.  I know the top 2 setting are 2” and 2.5”, but what are people actually getting?  I’m trying to decide what setting to go with. Has anyone noticed that their’s have settled out over time?
 

Also,  would UCA be required or recommended if the highest setting is used?

 

 I have a 2021 Silverado RST.  Thanks in advance for any input.

I'm about to install some, but just my thoughts on it...

 

The physical measurement of the shock should be the distance taller than stock to make the difference. Also, the shocks use compressed gas inside. If it changes height over time that would seem to me like there is a leak. 

 

I'm interested to see someone's thoughts who have used them though.

What heights settings are you going with?  Let me know what the actual lift you get is, if you don’t mind.   I can’t find any in stock right now.

I'm thinking 2" to level it. After I see how that looks I might add a 1" block in the rear. I'm hoping to get it done this weekend. 

 

I'll take some before and after measurements to compare actual vs listed.

Definitely interested to see.  Trying to choice of bilstein front and back, with 1" block in rear and upper control arm.  Or to go with a 3 inch lift kit that uses a spacer up front.

I’m interested to hear the difference in ride quality? I have the ranchos right now on my RST and I want to go to Bilsteins I think because the ranchos are terrible over washboard and pot holes. Please let me know what you think!

Second setting is 1.75. That's the setting you want. 2.5 with a 1" rear block would also work if you want to go that route but for the minimal gain you are pushing the geometry of you suspension a fair amount more with that extra half inch. They say anything over 3" you need new UCA's. Even then you are going to start running into problems with torn boots, CV axles etc. 2" is the way to go IMO. 

 

Don't need UCA's. 

 

Just curious, why Bilsteins? What coils are you using? Don't like the factory ride? Do a lot of off-roading i.e. every weekend? 99% of people are better off with a spacer lift. Bilsteins are "nicer shocks" but are much stiffer than stock and if you pair them with longer stiffer coils you are going to drastically reduce the ride quality of your truck for anything other than off-road use. 

 

2" spacer is the way to go for 99.9% of people on this forum. $60 if you install them yourself and you maintain the stock "Cadillac" ride quality. If you do off-road, look into Fox coilovers which will also allow you up to 3" of lift but are also better on the road.

Yeah you could definitely run Bilsteins up front at 2.5 and a 1" rear block and UCA but that sounds like a massive misappropriation of funds. Gonna ride like crap. 

 

Either run a 2" donut leveling kit or run Fox or Icon Coilovers at 3" with an Icon or aftermarket "add a leaf" if you want to off-road all the time. 

 

Side note: you can fit 35x11.5 tires on stock wheels with a 2" leveling kit.

Thanks for the response. I’m looking at bilsteins Bc my ride sucks.  When I hit a bridge transition or break in the rod it jars me and then I bounce down the road afterwards.  I’m currently running 2.25” pro comp lift, which pro com doesn’t even show as an offering on their website.  They only show the 1.5”, which is what I have minus the additional bottom spacer.  That is what was installed from the dealer.  Maybe the extra 0.25” is causing the jarring?  Surely not though.  I’ve looked at the fox but I don’t like the rebuild frequencies they recommend.  I don’t want to be Messing with that.  
 

when you say 2nd setting is 1.75” are you talking about the 2” setting and 1.75” is what you actually got?

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
