auto 4wd ?

when i first got my truck (new 12/99), i could put it in Auto 4wd and drive around town in the rain or light snow with very little "hopping" (not sure what the correct terminology is, but I mean hopping to be what the truck would do if it was in real 4wd and you tried turning on pavement).

 

as it gets older (91k), it seems to "hop" more - its not terrible, but definetly more than it used to. is something wearing out? is there something that i am not maintaining properly??

In "AutoTrac", the front differential is engaged, but the transfer case is only powering the rear wheels until slip is detected. Therefore, some binding of the driveline (front end) would be considered normal when driving on surfaces with better adhesion.

The only time I've noticed the "binding" problem is in hot summer if I have AUTO engaged in a parking lot and have to make a lot of slow turns, especially in reverse.

 

Otherwise, I've never noticed any problems. As the clutch pack inside the Auto transfer case wears, it can stick and engage harshly
