Is there a way to take off the cover on the cupholder on an 03 reg cab gm sierra. The actual part that the cup sits on is rivited on to the middle seat. But can you take the cover off of it. I wanna install a switch in the cover and it would be much easier if the cover was off. When i say cover i mean the moulding part that is on top of the holder. Does it just snap off?

Thanks

Does it just snap off?

I'm sure if you yanked on it enough it would "snap off", but then it would be broken!!! LOL!!! (just kidding).

Actually I really haven't looked at one close enough to give you a straight answer...

I checked mine out quite well and it appears to me that the cover is heat staked to the black parts where the cup sits in that is rivited to the bracket. So I would say that short of drilling rivits or breaking the cover there would no simple way to get it off.

are u thinking of putting in the cupholder that pulls outta the dash which some models have? i see there is a spot there with a dummy plate on it so it must be possible, any idea what the dash piece would cost? seems it would make more sense to free up the floor and have it hidden when not in use

I'm not sure about the 03 and up body style but the swing down type is fastened by 2 or 4 screws which you should be able to locate when it is the down position.

And the center console model you can grab hold of it and sort of twist it and it will pop out. There's actually a little bit of storage space underneath it. I keep a pair of safety glasses, my mechanix gloves and a tow strap in there just so I know exactly where to find them should I need them.

I have the new type that is the 2 cup on the floor mounted to the middle seat.

let me know if anyone figures out how to get it off.

Thanks

hey mountaineer that link was exactly what i was talking about, would anybody know the part # of this option, i might go to the dealer during the week to look up the price and see if its worthwhile, then pull out the holders on the floor, it would look cleaner anyway and maybe be an easier reach for the coffee. oh im driving a 2002 silv ls. why didnt they just put all the cupholders in the dash?????

I don't have the part number, but try posting the question in the GMPartsDirect.com forum (A preferred vendor here) or send an e-mail to www.gmpartsdirect.com attn 1725 and ask him.

Be sure to give him your interior color, or even better, your VIN number, so he can give you the correct P/N for your interior.

You can check that part number at GMPartsDirect.com also. Even after S$H, it may be cheaper than going to your local dealer. Everything I've ordered from them has been.

the cupholders in the dash gave those earlier trucks an uncureable dash rattle

I added one to my '91 (which didn't come with one), and never had any rattling. :uhoh:

Ah, I thought you meant the classic body style when you said earlier trucks. :uhoh:

I don't know about the new body style '99's and up, mine has the center console with cup holders.
