TSB information

I have a list of TSBs for my '03 Silverado. Can anyone tell me where I can get more information on them, such as suggested service procedures? (Without having to go to the stealership if possible). Thanks.

On that topic is a dealer obigated to cover a TSB for free if the truck is still under warranty? I called my dealer about the synthetic fluid for the front diff TSB and they said they don't cover it for free.

Good point. My local dealer is doing new trucks fresh off the transporter, and the cost is built into the Delivery & Inspection cost. What excuse did your dealer give you? And how much $$$ did they want?

 

Rather than use the $24/qt Goodwrench synthetic 75W-90 in the front axle, use any GL-5 synthetic 75W-90. It's an open diff, so you don't have to worry about special friction modifiers.

Well he goes (the service guy at the dealer) "Ya I heard about that one, synthetic is $24 a quart" I then stopped him and said "I thought TSB's were handled for free if the truck is under warranty". He said no, only recalls. I then call the 800 number in the manual and they called the dealership who said they are looking into it and GM customer service will get back to me this week. They said there was an update to the TSB (some "a" revision, but I don't know what it says) which then supercedes it BUT if the syn fluid was supposed to be in there before I took delivery then that may supercede that so ????

 

If they walk away from it I will just get something like Amsoil and do it myself one of these days when it is a little warmer. It is like 7 out right now so NO WAY I'm laying on a cold concrete floor...

Let's be lawyers and split hairs for a minute. TSB = Technical Service Bulletin.

 

Just what it says it is...a BULLETIN. Ergo...information provided to ALLL dealers by the manufacturer explaining in detail common service problems and/or procedures.

Often tips for resolving common customer complaints.

 

Now...does that mean that because it is a common problem, that GM should cover it for free? In cases where it is clearly a warrantable thing...of course they should. In cases where it is not necessarily a warrantable thing....Hmmmm therein lies the gray area.

 

Example: 2000 GMC truck "increased accelerator pedal effort". Okay...GM has several TSB's on this problem, the fixes range from cleaning the throttle body, to replacing the throttle body.

 

My warranty expired 2000 miles ago and the dealer charged me to clean the TB. Should he have replaced the TB? Should he have charged me? Who knows...it's obvious that carbon build-up in the TB caused the sticky gas pedal. It's obvious that cleaning the TB fixed it (at least temporarily). It's also obvious that GM redesigned the TB to prevent this problem.....

 

Had I brought it in before the 36K mile marker? I suppose I would have encouraged the dealer to replace the TB as for me it would have been the sure fix and it woulda been free..... But since I let it go too long, I'll settle for the clean up job and next time will clean it myself rather than pay $60 an hour for them to squirt top engine cleaner on my TB.

when it comes to warranty work dealerships are somewhat taken out of the decition making process when it comes to what repair is made. if gm sais

do not replace throttle body if it sticks. then the dealerships have to listen or gm won't pay the dealership for the repair. so sometimes even if you push for replacement it just won't happen.

It seems you have to have a complaint about a related part before they will do a tsb under warranty. Maybe claim there are humming or other noises coming from the front diff.

In my case the TSB says the fix should have been done before delivery to the first customer (me) and the truck has only 3380 or so miles on it. I'm waiting to hear what they say this week. .. I may use the "it is not acting right" line if they try and blow it off.

Eek, I know what you mean about cold temps. Was -34 F on Monday. I don't suppose you have a shop with radiant floor heating like mine??

 

Yeah, if I had to lay my poor gimpy back on a cold cement floor, I'd be crippled until July!

 

Now you know why I do the servicing in Sept. The front axle is really easy to service, since GM thoughtfully put a drain plug on it. Take off the skid plate (If equipped) to make it even easier, unless you don't mind having dirty gear oil ooze all over your skidplate.

No nope heat in there, nor in the barn (in fact the frost proof hydrant out there for the horses even froze) so wont be changing any oil until it warms up some.

 

There is no skid plate on it so that would make it easier. I read somwhere what the part numbers were for the skid plate package if I want to add it sometime. I used to have a Go Rhino skid plate for the Dana 60 front, that thing was beefy

On the hobby farm I rigged up a return pipe back to the house. The pipes were buried 6 feet and I put a 2x8 sheet of 2 inch SM Styrofoam on top before I filled the trench.

 

Temps colder than -10 F, I'd turn on the electric wrap for the hydrant and open the bypass valve. Water would circulate through a small electric pump from the house to barn and back.

 

Kept the cows and horses and barn cats happy all winter.

 

Trust me, you WANT a radiant floor slab. You NEED a radiant floor slab. I used to use an outdoor wood furnace to keep the shop/barn/house cozy, then switched to an outdoor coal furnace. Much, much cheaper, no hassle with cutting wood.

 

Do you need a skid plate? When I took mine off to flush the front axle at 600 miles, I left it off. Never put it back on. My "off roading" is a long driveway.

This hydrant is has a burried pipe that "supposedely" shuts the water off like 6ft below the ground but this is the 2nd time it has froze up solid where the handle wont even pull up. We even have heated cable on it but still is frozen. So for the time being I have to cart pails of water from the house out there for their heated buckets. Thankfully just for 2 horses

 

A heated floor would be nice for sure.. I was thinking even a small portable heater would help in there. Colder than a SOB out there mucking the stalls etc.

 

 

How much do you want your skidplate? Do you need to drill any holes do you know or does it just use existing ones?
