Just purchased Sierra 2500 gas. The dealer is offering me a 5 year/100,000 kilometre oil/filter service package for $2600 CAD. It is a bit of a long story (perhaps for another thread), but it is intended to replace another warranty package that I bought but am cancelling. The salesman indicates this is based on a 6000 km cycle (so 17-ish times) and is usually offered at 5 year/60,000 km, but he is upping the offer a bit. He also states if a guy walked in off the street to buy this package, it would be around $4100.

As, except for the first couple times, I had oil service done at a non-GM outlet on my previous truck (1500 6.2L), which is a bit smaller than the new one, I have little experience with/knowledge of oil changes for a 2500. I understand they take a bit more oil (and bigger filter??), but I also used to do my oil service every 5000 km and sometimes sooner.

He advises the service can be obtained from any North American GM dealer or any other certified facility.

Looking for any input from other 2500 owners (or anyone else who may have knowledge) on the value/lack thereof of this offer.

This offer was just made and I have about one week to decide. I am leaving in the early a.m. for a week-long road trip, so will be unable to research this topic to any extent.

 All advice is appreciated,

I suspect that package costs more than the dealer would charge you for the number of individual oil changes allowed under the package.  These kinds of packages are almost never a good deal. Instead, they are an additional profit/commission opportunity for the dealer and salesperson.

The oil change takes exactly 8 quarts and the filter is a standard filter type that is around $10.

I think this is a bad deal.  You can get a full syn oil change for around $80usd at various places.  If you do this deal and do 10 oil changes (every 6k miles), it will cost you $198usd per change.

Will your truck be used in a severe application that requires such frequent oil changes?

The chart in the Owner's Manual shows oil change frequency of 12,000Km (7,500 miles) or each year whichever comes first, with the caveat that the Oil Change Reminder should be followed.
The program they are offering seems to be excessively frequent, and that is time out of your day to schedule and complete the appointment.

Would be interesting to know how many miles our trucks go on average before the Oil Service Reminder comes on.
