Has anyone moved the video rear view mirror camera? For a truck cap.

Recommended Posts

I added a Lear cap to my 2020 Silverado. It rendered my video rear view mirror useless (since it blocks the rear view camera). I am not talking about the backup camera. I'm referring to the one on the inside rear view mirror. Has anyone successfully moved the camera so it could be mounted on the back of a truck cap? I assume the wiring would have to be extended.

Thanks

I have not but did a little digging and someone said that this extension would work

Also found this, but no idea if anyone has tried it?

I was doing some digging because I'm interested in a cap for my LTZ.  I think the second link is for the tail gate back up camera, not the rearview mirror camera.

Just some info that could save you $. The camera connectors are a “Fakra” style connector and there are multiple variations that are keyed/clocked differently and denoted by a letter after the connector name. Google Fakra connector and it will yield a plethora of info on it. Really helped me understand what to order.

Having said that, you can use a “Fakra Z” cable type which is a universal configuration of the connector to then fit any other style Fakra connector.  I used them to relocate the camera on the front of my grille to my Westin grilled guard. Works perfectly, snaps right in and no loss of video quality. Cost me $10 for a 16ft. cable from Amazon. The descriptions typical make reference to it being used for a GPS antenna cable but it is the same cable used for the cameras.

I just put an order in for a 1500 and would like a topper so my concern is if moving this camera would have any effect on the 360 view.  I ordered the works for in dash video display and I'm wondering if anyone has had any issues with the 360deg after moving the rear view camera.

Camera source link above has specific kits for trucks with 360. I take my tailgate off for our slide in camper and lose all cameras. Relocation will be one of my next mods.

I have a cap on a 2020 LTZ which covers the rear view video mirror. This does not affect the 360 view. The rear camera on the tail gate is used for this.

That said, I would love to move the camera on the back of the cab to the back of my cap. That video rear view mirror is very nice and I miss it.

We have a simple solution that just about anyone with basic mechanical skills can install.  It comes with a factory GM camera, extension cable, and a small fully adjustable bracket assembly that allows you to attach the camera onto the third brake light of your topper. Check it out here:

We have a universal style kit that can be mounted on any flat surface, i.e. doesn't require a third brake light for mounting.  This model will be great for people with drop in campers etc.  https://www.camerasource.com/factory-digital-mirror-camera-universal-relocation-kit-for-2019-23-gm-trucks-camera-included?q=cs-3gm

does this kit impede the topper door from opening fully due to the clip on brake light bracket?

thank you.

I had the same issue, I ended up buying an aftermarket fin type antenna from Amazon (image attached), removed the interior electronics, drilled a hole for the camera and mounted the camera in the housing.  Then mounted the fin on top of the cap and used the cable listed below (Amazon).  It took a couple of tries get the angle right (used silicone to glue the camera into the housing) but it works well for me, less than $50 including painting it to match my truck and a few hours DIY time.

My dad has my truck for the next couple of weeks, I will post a picture when he gets back.

I have installed this system on my Leer Cap. Check out "Camera Source". It works just like the OEM camera on the back of the cab. All the functionality of the Mirror display will work as well (zoom, Up / down...).

Check out their URL:
