My grandson bought a 2006 Colorado LT1 crew cab 2wd z71 and only has one key and remote. The key is not chipped, but I was told to get the key part # by using the vin and they could help me with the keys I ordered and had cut not working. Do I have to go through a locksmith or dealer to get the part # for the key? Anyone else had a problem getting spare keys made that work? Thanks in advance.

Why not just go to the dealer and have them make a key?  Its $10.14 at a Chevy dealer and you know its the right blank.

Also.  If you have keys made by the VIN and the key that came with the truck doesn't match the cut, that means the ignition cylinder is worn too far to have a new key work or it was swapped for a used one or re-coded and you will have to trace your original key that came with it.
