So to get started I have a 94 Chevy c1500 automatic transmission it was running decent for a good while when one day as i was pulling in to unload some material I shifted into reverse and the gear didn’t grab I went through the gears and it wouldn’t grab eventually I managed to get it in reverse when I started backing up I heard some rough noises (I was backing up slowly ) I left it in park did what I had to do when I left I shifted into drive and it ran fine all the way home 30mi after that everything was fine for about a month or 2 then suddenly one day it wouldn’t go into Drive I managed to get it drive the following day same thing but when I drove a couple of feet it fell out of drive (just reving) I was able to put it into reverse and managed to reverse back home ever since I could only use reverse and neutral if anyone has any advice maybe it’s happened to someone before do I need to change the gear box or maybe the whole transmission? I checked and it manually goes through each gear but no movement any help would be greatly appreciated

time to rebuild or replace the transmission. Have You checked the fluid?  Do you know which trans you have?

Richard,

thanks for the reply but yea the first thing I tried was doing a trans fluid change and filter also I failed to mention when I removed the pan there was a small rod looking metal on the bottom of the pan it was somewhat bent I wish I had a picture of it but I don’t the next thing I did was the speed sender was basically hanging on by a wire so I fixed that but no good

well if you can figure out where that came from you may be able to repair it with out a rebuild. what trans is it?

Richard,

yea That’s what I’m hoping but when i dropped the trans pan the shifter was connected with the rod like it should be I couldn’t see anywhere it would go but maybe I need to dig alittle deeper but it’s a 4L60e
