Hello all,

So Im at my wits end with an intermittent no crank/no start issue on my truck and I badly need help. It’s a 1500 with 5.3 remote start.

Truck has 141k on it. Last year I went to start the truck with the key and it would not crank. There was no relay click that I was able to hear but I could hear what sounded more like a clunk coming from what I would guess to be the solenoid like the truck was trying to start. It would crank and start if I jumped it with another vehicle. I didnt suspect the battery but I replaced it anyway which did not help. it acts the same with remote start. I checked voltage from the signal wire and it had battery voltage with key in crank position. I pulled the starter, cleaned the mounting surface off to ensure I had a good ground to the block, cleaned the positive battery cable off, made sure my signal wire terminal was in good shape and making a good connection. I also bench tested the starter to make sure my pull out coil, hold out coil and motor were all good and everything functioned fine.

A year went by trouble free and now my issue is back. I no longer trust this vehicle as this issue is so far the last of a TON that I have had with this truck.

Are these years known for starter issues? I assume there is a remote start/truck-is-already-running dummy module between the switch and starter. Could that be it?

You need the new version of the starter. The old has the very same symptoms. The new version of the starter. Problem solved. 🍻

Aren't battery cables a known issue?

Update:

Thanks for the suggestion on the starter. I bought a new one and got it in yesterday. The truck has never started so well! It’s much more responsive when turning the key and it lights off way faster. Thanks again!

Glad you got it swapped and firing up a lot better. 🍻

They are as well but the pre 17 starters are known POS. Sadly we can not expect much from GM.
