38 watt fogs - longterm reports

For those running the 893 bulbs, which I think are 38 watts, is everything still working and looking as it should, with no melting of the foglight housing?

I'm considering getting some 38's, but still kind of leary after melting my original housings with 55 watt bulbs a few years ago.:thumbs:

i ran the regular sylvania 893s for over a year and a half and about a month ago switched to the 893 silverstars. I have had NO problems

I'm a little confused, but please forgive me if this has already been answered...

I was looking into replacing my stock fogs with silverstar lights...and from the above post I assume the 893s will fit, but I also heard the 880s will fit as well. Is that true? Also, can anyone tell me what the current number of watts are in the stock bulbs (4145s or H10 Sylania is what it says on the stock bulb)?

Ok and here is another stupid question...the more watts equals the brighter the bulb, right? So if the 893s will work with no melthing that would be the ideal replacement, right?

Again forgive my ignorance...lol.

If it's a '99 - '02 Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon, the stock bulbs are 880, 27 watts.

893's are 38 watts and will fit in place of the 880's.

885's are 55 watt bulbs. I DO NOT recommend using these. I melted my housings due to the higher heat a few years ago with a set of them.

Concering the Silverstar's, they are suppose to produce a wighter/brighter light, but without the added heat.

And your correct, the higher the watts, the brighter the light, just like household lightbulbs. :)

Thanks Mountaineer Tom for the speedy responce :)

Acutally I drive a 2003 Sierra. Did they change the fog light bulbs when they changed the front clip? If so, will the 893s still fit?

Oh yeah, I forgot to add in the earlier post, I guess the '03's and up are the same as far as coming with the 880 bulbs, but I've never looked at one. If they are, they the 893's should fit.

Hmm...I'm sure they are the same. Thanks for all your help.

I wonder why Sylvania doesn't name all their bulbs the same? I went crazy looking for a 4145 or H10 replacement (which is what it says on the acutal stock bulb).

lol...oh well :)

No problem. Also, look in your owners manual. Mine had a page or two near the back that listed numbers for replacement bulbs for just about the entire truck. :)

lol...yeah that was the first place I looked. It conveniently left off the fog light numbers. Said to contact dealer for all other bulb numbers. :)

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll still have to think about it. Not sure if the cash may be worth it. I'd rather save up for some 20s first. :)

So let me get this straight you are saying that the 893 will fit the 2003 fullsize fog lamp. I was under the impression that the base of the 880 and 893 was to small for the fog lights that are on the 2003. What appers to fit and i havent tried it yet is the head light bulb base is the same as the fog light bulb. Any one have any info on this?

I installed the Silverstar 893's 14 months ago. Since then both square reflectors have melted off. It took several months for the first one and the passenger side just melted off a couple of months ago. I have not had time to see if I can remove them from the bulb housing. They are just laying inside. I will probably go with something different (PIAA) this spring when things warm up around here.

Where did you guys find the 893's at? I've had trouble finding them at local autoshops, seems they cary the silverstar headlights but they don't cary any replacment bulb in the silverstar lineup.

Thanks.
