Geez, do NOT do that! At the very least, you'll break the axle after turning a corner a few times. Sounds like you want to make a "poor man's spool."

 

Spools are strictly off-road use and/or racing. Never, ever on the street.

 

I bought a brand new 1985 Ford F-350 cornbinder chassis cab 2WD. It came with an open Dana, so I put in a Detroit Locker. If you don't know how the Detroit Locker works, it basically locks the axle ALL THE TIME.

 

When you go round a corner, there is an "overrun" ramp that disengages the slow wheel. The disengagement is quite harsh and noisy: CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK. Folks expect to see parts on the ground when they hear this, but it's perfectly normal and causes no axle damage.

 

In winter 1986, I had to pick up a couple of skidder tires at the local tire shop, so I drove in empty. There is a long steep hill on the highway near the tire shop, and it had snowed good, so snow/ice on the hill.

 

I was going about 40 MPH when suddenly the rear end swung out. In an instant I was sideways, spun like a top, and thankfully came to rest on the highway and right side up.

 

I had to change my drawers (Well, DUH), went to pick up the skidder tires, and carried on. With a full load (+5,000 lbs) the thing had great traction and was very safe. Empty, I never drove it in winter again.

 

The factory G80 GovLok is quite safe in this respect: any speed over about 20 MPH, the flyweight governer assembly latches out so the axle can NOT lock: it functions as an open axle.

 

Put in something like a PowerTrax NoSlip and be done with it
