Hour Meter

out of curiostiy the other day, I looked at the hour meter on the truck (while truck is NOT running, press and hold the trip odometer button).

i am at 2535 hours.

for my 91.5K miles, that averages to about 36 mph while the truck is running. Has anyone else done this? just wondering how that would compare to others...

Ok, that is too cool ... I had no idea that feature existed! Anyway, 675.3 for me! Avg mph = ~ 44.4mph

Hmm...interesting test...lol.

I'm at 476.5 hours with 10,127 miles. But I tend to idle a lot. I know I know...it's bad, but oh well

hours = 2869

33 mph

and the previous owner told me they were highway miles!

The traffic jams aren't THAT bad in MI.

I'm at 909 hours with 32,269 miles which is about 35.5 mph. That is cool. I didn't know it existed, and I had to go check right when I read this. Thanks

Actually, even before my last test drive and before I special ordered, the 2000 GMC Sierra brochure mentioned this in several places. I thought to myself "about time."

Only thing better would be to NOT have to check the hours with the motor / ign off. Does the 2004 truck allow this through the DIC? Even better, put a digital or analog counter right next to the odo display.

I put a Hobb's on my 1984 Ford F-150 to track idle time, since at -40 working in the bush, you do NOT shut things off.

Yes, the trucks with the fully functional DIC can access it while the truck is running through steering whell buttons.

Actually fellas, the hourmeter is the amount of time the engine has been running. Whether it be driving or idling. It has nothing to do with an average of MPH. If that was the case I'd be averaging 27.3 MPH. And I know that isn't anywhere close.

Well, if the engine has been running for 675.3 hours in my case. And in those 600+ hours it has propelled my truck a distance of right at 30k miles, then that would mean that I averaged 44.4 mph overall. So the time you were sitting still is averaged in there as well, that's why HumanZoom with his low avg mph is the "idle-king".

30,000 miles / 675.3 hours = 44.4 miles / hours (mph)

That's where everyone is getting that # from.

Yikes, you ARE the Idle King!

The hour meter is the best way to judge when to change your oil and/or filter when doing a lot of idling. Say every 300-400 hours on commercial equipment and every 150 hours on LD stuff.
