OK, I probably caused this problem myself.  I have a 2019 New Body Sierra with the MultiPro Tailgate.

The other day I dropped the ONLY upper section of the tailgate to load 12' Trex decking boards between the center.

Now when I try to close or open the upper section it binds at the bottom to the point I get a big snap when it passes over the catching area.

I looked at loosening the hinge bolts  and getting some free space that way but it was a no go.

I've searched on line and all over this site.

Am I the first to encounter this problem.

Photos show where the upper hatch is binding.

It would appear that did it.  A couple hundred lbs unsupported weight on the t-gate and bouncing around traveling?

It doesn't appear that anything is bent and I checked the bolts on the upper hatch. I even tried using spacer washers to raise the hatch just a tad. though that gave me just enough clearance the upper locking mechanism no longer meshed.

I don't know if this is going to be a body shop repair or if if the dealership can handle it.

Something must be bent.  Probably going to have to replace some parts that have been tweaked but which ones? I have no Idea if parts are even available?  A dealer body shop might have more knowledge, that would be my advice.  They may know some tricks you don't.  On my 2017 the rear pass door did not align well. I tried to adjust it by loosing the hinges but could not get it to align.  15 min in the dealer body shop and they had it perfect.

Othing major that $$$ can't cure. Thanks ElCamino,

That's pretty much my thought.

I need to take it in to the dealer next week for a tire rotation and oil change ... Things I used to do myself but have become an appliance user.

I'd rather get dirty working on my classic Triumphs. I'll ask the dealer's body guy to have a look.

      It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.

      It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.
