AC Compressor/Clutch

Could really use some help an experience, in determining which direction I should go. 

 

2015 Sierra, 5.3L

 

Driving around the other day, felt the motor bog down for just a second...pull over and pop the hood to see smoke coming from the AC pulley/clutch and it's not spinning....only the belt on the pully. After a little cooling, tapped everything with a heavy wrench...everything spins again, but only blowing hot air.  Remove the clutch plate to find melted plastic and the cover seperated from another plate, blued from heat.  Pulley spins by hand, doesnt sound like metal pieces inside/grinding.  With the cover in place, can't get the compressor to turn over. Who has seen this before, and knows whether I need a new clutch or a whole new compressor and condenser?

You need a new compressor assembly. Sounds like your old one grenaded, blowing crud throughout. Thoroughly flush your system and you probably need to replace the condenser as they are very hard to flush effectively and get them totally clean

Thanks. I think so, too.  I can't think of anything else that would stop the clutch and keep it stopped long enough, for the clutch to got hot enough to separate the cover from the plate.  Bought the compressor and condenser today.

I'd replace the receiver/drier also. Most compressor warranties require it

The receiver/dryer is something that always gets changed when ever you open up the AC system.  Just good practice since it is what keeps the system clean and dry.
