Good evening,

I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD.  This evening while heading home I noticed my temperature gauge was malfunctioning as it did not register a temperature after about 5 minutes after start-up.  Also, upon arriving at my final destination, the temperature gauge still did not register a temperature and the cooling fan kept running. Any ideas what could be causing this problem?  Thank you.

Welcome to the site.

My two guesses would be either the coolant temp sensor, or thermostat has failed.

Hello!

I just experienced this problem earlier this year. I went into it starting with the coolant temperature sensor, as this was the cheapest and easiest option, and upon install and resetting the battery, this solved the problem for about three months.

However, understand that if it comes back, it is almost guaranteed to be the thermostat. Especially if you have a check engine light and the code calls for P0128

Truthfully, if you're comfortable doing it, my advice to you would be to just start with the thermostat, it is a very easy repair and I think it will solve your problem. Judging by the threads on this forum, it seems to always be that the coolant temperature sensor is always just a temporary fix, and it was that way in my situation as well.

The fact of the matter is, these thermostats aren't exactly...good, haha. I changed mine for the first time a year or so ago and it lasted a grand total of three months before getting stuck open. However, as I mentioned before, they are super easy. Plop one in, and you won't have to listen to those stupid fans again!
