Key fob programming?

Hi,

 

Has anyone added a 3rd key fob using the on-line suggestions of using your key in the door and putting the fob in the remote pocket in the console on a 2500HD or 3500HD?  I've seen where this is supposed to work for Silverado trucks built up to 2020 but I've also seen where the HDs don't work using this method and you need to go to a dealer or locksmith.

from what I know most fobs have to be activated at the dealer

I have a 2021 2500HD and I programmed a 3rd FOB by using the directions in the owners manual (pgs 16 - 18).

I did not have to go to the dealer.

As long as you still have both originals, that procedure in the manual will work.  

 

If you don't have both originals (lost one of them) then yes, the dealer or a locksmith would be needed.

Thank you for the responses.

Backstory... a buddy lost one of his fobs and cost close to $300 to get a new one and have it programmed at a locksmith.  I wanted to get a 3rd so I'd have a backup.
