Have their paper filter as I have had some bad luck in the past with wet filters.  They want 70 bucks for it!?  Same price as the oiled filter.

 

Anyone successfully swap it out with something else?  Seems absurd and I'm certain they don't MFG them themselves

I've been running AFE dry flow filters on several vehicles. You'd just need to find measurements for what you have and see what they offer that's the same or close.

The AFE Dry Flow filters are excellent to use and have also used in my past vehicles and still with the wife's car.  Unfortunately if you've purchased the S&B CAI, you'll only find a smaller cone filter size to accommodate the flange size in your CAI. 

The AFE filters are more $$ on average it seems presently. 

 

I go with the S&B oiled version, as the media is cotton, vs the paper dry filter and can stretch the filter cost, by multiple reuses, while also providing increased air flow with my LTs and aftermarket exhaust.   

Issues with a oiled filter are due to over oiling and shared your concerns years ago, but best advise is to follow the instructions and allow oil to naturally saturate the media.  The filter only needs a thin layer of oil.

 

I'd also be interested in a dry cotton/synthetic filter option, as long as it accommodated or complimented the S&B box design.  We do have dusty and/or dry parts of our seasons, where a dry filter would be the better option.

Ended up buying one of their dry filters to replace it.  On a quick attempt to get the old one out, seems like it's going to be a bear.  Almost feels like it's got adhesive on the thing

For reference, Google "Project Farm Air Filter" and you'll see his testing with filters.
Then, look at this at 20:30.  K&N can kinda do it but S&B's knock off will not do the same things

I still think that the guy in the video is wrong and his data is outdated, but even someone trying to push oil filters is "meh" with the knock offs.

Interesting video, but MAN he DRAGS it out on how/why it works. For the offroad stuff, I get what he's talking about. I'm not sure how much this applies to modern fuel injected vehicles with an enclosed filter housing whether it be stock replacement or a closed air box with a massive cone filter. If the K&Ns are so good then why do they sell pre-filters for them? Is it another revenue stream or to ease in cleaning since you can easily wash off the pre filter and not have to deal with the pleats and oiled cotton holding the dirt in the filter itself.

It's probably the silicone seal S&B uses.  The only flow numbers I've seen between dry vs oiled is roughly 1% difference. 🤷‍♂️

I have had two S&B cold air intakes in my 2018 SLT and 2019 High Country and bought the dry filter on each one. Never threw a code. Put over 40k on them. Took out every 10k and blew them out with air compressor. I will be purchasing another one for my 2018 denali

Good info to fall back on. 

That does have me rethink maybe my air filter maintenance being done every other oil change, than my usual routine of doing so every 5k...which was last week. With that, the filter had collected some insects and may do the wrap on filter to possibly extend the needed filter maintenance on my preferred oiled filter.

    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.  
    • Thank You.   So far my new ride is making me look like a genius for going with the 3.0L, as my first fuel refill occurred over three weeks from when I took delivery.  This engine combination is very amazing.  So far no issues and had not done a regen yet.
    • I am curious as to how much fluid you put back in the transmission ( assuming you had replaced the filter to compare to my findings ) and then went through the process of warming up the trans before pulling the check plug to drain out the excess and if you measured how much came back out.    I just found it surprising that some claimed a certain amount less fluid being put in and then draining some back out. The attitude of the truck as per if the surface is level and how the trucks stance is would make quite a difference since the check plug is right at the front of the transmission.
