Hey all,

New member here so I apologize if this was a topic before.  I tried looking but couldn’t find.  
 

I have a 22 RST With a 5.3 and have owned since 16 miles.  It now has 6,000 miles on it and makes a knocking or ticking sound while cold starting.  I took it to the dealer and they said that this was the direct injection working under a cold start.  Let me know your thoughts.  Video is below.  Thanks!

Not DI noises.

 

Its either a lifter that isn't pumping up or has collapsed.

Thanks for the reply.  Here is the video uploaded to YouTube.  Odd it does it only in the morning.  After sitting for ten hours at work it doesn’t do it.  Cold start is around 55 degrees to 60 degrees.  Any thoughts?

The service advisor who I was working with was going to show to his foreman on Monday.  Kind of unfortunate how it is pretty much brand new and will have to be torn apart. I am probably going to trade it in.

That sounds like  a lifter thats ready to come apart or not pumping up correctly.Thats not a normal noise and  needs to be addressed .We have engines torn apart all over the shop and parking lot waiting for parts that we can't get. Police cars sitting for months waiting for crankshafts or complete engines that GM can't produce fast enough to keep up with the failures. Lets not even talk about transmission problems.The 6.2 engines are seizing up before the first oil changes are due!  What has become of GM. I have been a line mechanic in a GM dealer since 1975 and never seen such a poor product being put out. I was with Oldsmobile when they came out with the 5.7 Diesel disaster and also Cadillac for 23 years when they crammed the HT4100 down everyones throats. They should be ashamed of themselves with what they are producing today and charging astronomical prices for. Don't let them tell you that noise is normal.

Thank you for the input.  I am in the transportation industry and I know that there is a problem.  I understand even I cannot duplicate customers concerns the first time around.  My argument with the service advisor really didn’t get anywhere so we’ll see where it goes when he shows the video to the shop foreman.  I’ll keep the thread updated with an outcome if I ever get one.

Refrence that bulletin I linked.  They can pull it up in GM Service Information.

 

Bulletin is 19-NA-218 and here is the link to read it for yourself - 19-NA-218 1..2 (nhtsa.gov)

 

"Technically" its 2019-2020 but the description of the condition sounds exactly like what you've got going on.

Mine does EXACTLY this. It’s the exact same in frequency and everything. Did you ever find out?

Mine ended up being a scored cylinder wall. Engine replacement. Sounded just like yours.

      Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.

      Why does Mobil Premium cost 90 cents a gallon more than Shell Premium when their regular offerings are but pennies apart?

      Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.

      Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.

      I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
