Changed from dino to Mobil 1

Hi All,

I recently bought a used 2000 GMC Sierra 4x4 5.3 ex cab and it now has 34,000 miles on it. I changed the oil once before with dino oil and the dipstick read full. I changed the oil this time and switched over to Mobil 1. The next morning I checked the oil and it was down a half a quart. I checked for leaks and did not see any? Being a newbie at this, I was wondering if there would be any reason for that? And also does it make sense to switch to Mobil1 at this point?

Thanks,

Tony

Assuming you changed the filter, did you run the engine after changing the oil, before you checked it? The filter can hold from 1/2 quart to a full quart of oil. If you don't give the engine enough time to fill the filter, you may think it's full and find out after driving that it's down. I just switched to mobile 1 on my car after 1400 miles. Everything is great so far.

thanks for the quick responses.. I bought a six pack of Mobil1 at BJ's and put all six in. I put a new ac delco filter on and then I drove it that night for 10 miles. The next morning I checked it and it was not at the top of the cross hatches where it was last oil change. It is down some..

How do you know that your truck used some oil? Maybe your oil filter is doing a better job holding more oil. Buy a bottle of M1 and fill her up again. AFter 200 miles or so look at the dipstick again. Remember your seals maybe dirty so let this run with M1 run 3000 miles only. M1 will clean your engine. If your seals leaking, you might need AutoRX. www.autorx.com and follow the instuctions to the T!!....

I do exactly what you do. I buy the case of six and that's it. I even let them sit upside down in the funnel for a while just to get every little bit out of those bottles. It never comes up to the top of the cross hatch for me either. But as long as it's in the middle somewhere I don't bother topping it off. I'm thinking Mobil is short filling. Then again, I've never changed it with any other oil.

I just switched to Mobil 1 this weekend. I haven't changed my own oil in so long I checked a website to make sure I was doing everything I needed to be doing. One important thing they mentioned: Before putting in the new oil filter, you should pour new oil into it until almost full. Putting in an empty oil filter can cause damage to the pleats upon startup because of pressure buildup when you first fire the engine back up. It did take about 3/4 of a quart worth of oil when I was pouring it in the filter.
