I changed my air filter today (2021 Denali 5.3L).  Pretty simple but for removing the electrical connector on the air tube.  I moved the red clip up but the thing would not come off.  Eventually, using way more effort and tries than I should have, it finally came off but I can’t say I know how I did it.

What am I missing or doing wrong?  It’s a stupid plug.  I feel like a fool.

pull red out then depress and pull out.

Depress the red tab?  Or, just above it?

After dealing with multiple GM vehicles with these types of connectors the past few years. I have found it easiest to use a small pair or pliers on the larger connector and a pair of needle nose or small pliers to depress the tab just under the red pull out (sometimes i just depress the red pull out and the tab) and pull apart using the two pliers. They kind of get suction stuck together like two 5-gallon home depot buckets when they get put in one another. Just have to be careful not to damage anything.

pull red

depress black as you pull

red piece when locked in (pushed in) is a prevent from being able to disconnect plug.

Honestly, when I did it on my truck and my wife's Yukon I just left the plug attached.  You can pull the box lid up high enough to easily get the filter out and the new one in.
