I'm looking to replace my current tow vehicle to pull a small camp trailer (<4000), so I'm looking at these 2014 - 19 units. I'm not that familiar with the 'newer' Chevys. I had an 06 a few years ago but it was getting up there in miles (286k), got something else, but now need a newer truck. Although my current trailer is fairly small, I may upgrade later, hence the search for something in the 8000# tow capacity range.

Realistically, although I want something that can tow, the majority of actual miles will be unhitched, so I'm looking for something above 15 mpg with no trailer.

So, although I know it's a subjective question, what are your favorite years in this series? With a 5.3L and 4x4, what are common issues?

I've looked through these forums and although I see issues, I can't figure which ones are the most common for the above models. Please let me know if there's a specific thread or site that details the above. My searches have been not very fruitful.

One thing I can't find is: is there an extended range fuel tank available in the 1500s? How common is it.

Thanks for your help.

My opinion is that the 2016-2018's are the best years. The 2019 LD would be the same as well.

You can search common issues can find a ton of info. Not all trucks will have those problems but they could happen. The 5.3's can have lifter failure or injector problems. Some can have thermostat issues or little things like that. The 6 speed transmissions are good units but can suffer from torque converter failure that usually takes out the transmission. The 8 speeds can have a shudder issue where the new updated fluid helps or they need a new converter to help that problem.

I have zero problems getting low 20's on the freeway with my 5.3 truck, just have to drive around the speed limit. I don't see why you couldn't avg between 17-18mpg if you drive it normally with a mix of city and freeway.
