Just replaced the complete ignition distributor in a '96 Kodiak with the 366ci V8 because the hall module in the base was bad and had no spark or fuel.  Now the truck starts but I need to set the ignition timing.  I've read I need to disconnect a single wire that is tan w/ black stripe to put the ignition control in base timing.

I cannot find this wire!

As things stand, the truck only runs at an indicated 30* of initial timing.  If I set it to 8* BTDC, the truck won't stay running.  Thanks.

Next to/near the ECM.

Put the IC system in the bypass mode by disconnecting the set timing connector (1). This is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black stripe lead. This connector breaks out of the engine wiring harness near the ECM (2).

With the ignition switch OFF, connect the pickup lead of the timing light to the number one spark plug. Use a jumper lead between the wire and plug or an inductive type pickup.

Do not pierce the wire or attempt to insert a wire between the boot and the wire. Connect the timing light power leads according to manufacturer's instructions.

Start the engine. Aim the timing light at the timing mark. The line on the balancer or pulley will line up at 0 degrees BTDC on the timing mark. If a change is necessary, loosen the distributor hold-down clamp bolt at the base of the distributor. While observing the mark with the timing light, slightly rotate the distributor until the line indicates the correct timing. Tighten the hold-down bolt. Recheck the timing.

Turn OFF the engine. Remove the timing light. Reconnect the number one spark plug wire if removed.

Reconnect the Set Timing connector.

Awesome, thank you!

The truck belongs to my neighbor.  Before I head over there, I’d like to have all my ducks in a row.  Where is the ECM in this truck?  I’m reading it may be inside the cab under the pass side dash?

Also do I need anything special to reset the MIL or will a standard/basic OBD2 tool do it?

Yea, says "under right side of instrument panel."

Best I can tell that "should" have an OBD2 interface?  So a code reader would probably do the job.
