Cupton Posted July 12, 2024 Posted July 12, 2024 Anyone here in replace your recovery hooks? Mine are getting a little corrosion/rust on the bottom, so thought I would get ahead of it now and swap them out (not paint) and was looking at the OEM replacements as well as aftermarket. Im seeing a ton of aftermarket replacements at half the cost of the OEM hooks but I question quality. Happy to pay the OEM price it if it's truly one of those "better to stick with OEM" pieces of steel. Thought I would check in with the group. Thanks!
rav3 Posted July 12, 2024 Posted July 12, 2024 Search YouTube. Several videos there. From what I saw, it's a pain to get a couple bolts out 1

I have, the OEM are actually a good quality product. I have put both the chrome, and a set of red ones on my 16, and 18 trucks. They have held up quite well, and they come with the factory hardware to install, which you will need as the easiest way to remove the ones on the truck is to cut the bolt holding the driver side hook. You see exactly why you need to do this when you start, or the alternative is to loosen bumper, and other parts to make the space you need to extract the bolt. Genius design! 1

Oh yea, I have been under there to take a peek. I see that one bracket/bolt on the drivers side that would get in the way of one of the two bolts in coming out. Im fully prepared to just cut the dang bolt off and then install the new one with the bolt head on the opposite side. Not sure why they didnt do this initially anyway! I was thinking of doing red myself. I think it'll look good with the dark slate color truck, the red GMC badge, red All-Terrain badge and red recovery hooks. 2
Cupton Posted July 17, 2024 Author Posted July 17, 2024 Removal and install went fine. I didnt jack up the truck at all, so there was a little bit of me playing contortionist to cut that dang bolt, get the remaining out and put the new bolts and hooks in. In the end I learned one thing. There is a lot of black grease under there. Im still finding it in body parts I didnt even have under the truck! That being said, I like the red! Next task is to recoat my nerf bars because the powder coat is starting to chip away. 1
