I have no idea how to do this - can you get it done? At what mileage should you do it at? How is the truck driving differently now? Better throttle response? Thanks!

Hi -

Cleaning the throttle body is really simple. Loosen the hose clamp, remove the hose from the TB, spray the throttle body with throttle body cleaner (not carb cleaner), open the butterfly valve and spray both sides and around the opening. Use a lint free rag to wipe off the buildup in and around the TB, reassemble hose and tighten clamp. Done in 15 minutes

I had to do mine at 14K miles – my Escalade had a terrible, inconsistent idle (constantly fluctuation between 400 and 600 RPM). Now it idles at 550 RPM all day long.

Some folks opt to take the entire TB off to give it a real good cleaning. I wouldn’t do that unless you have a ton of miles and some real serious buildup.

You get a can of throttle body cleaner at any auto parts store. Just make sure it says that it’s safe for all TB surfaces. Costs about $3.00.

I have posted detailed instructions in the past on how to properly clean your TB and IAC. A search using JayMan for a filter, in All Forums, under Any Date, should uncover them.

If all you do is constant Interstate driving at 75 MPH, your TB/IAC will be fine for +50,000 miles. If you do stop-n-go town driving at -30 F, you had better do the procedure twice a year.

Here are some links:

It helps to have the Helm shop manual in front of you. There are a lot of tricky details that can foul you up: for example, the IAC has a tiny o-ring that can be damaged and/or remain stuck in the IAC well, so when you put the IAC back in it isn't sealed and you have a vacuum leak and very erratic idle.

Remember that occaisional high-speed Interstate driving is needed to keep the plugs clean. Constant stop-n-go

Also, an erratic idle can be caused on some 1999-2001 trucks if you change the battery or switch grades of gasoline. You have to do the Idle Learn Procedure, which I have also posted detailed instructions for.

Hope this helps!

yeah at about 55,000 miles i decided to take my TB off to clean it. The throttle sticking was really getting on my nerves.

I was not surprised to see it was built up very thick all over the back and in the intake manifold itself. Probably about 3/16 inch thick everywhere, no kidding. After making the throttle body spotless and cleaning the intake some i stuck it back on and yeah, what a difference. No sticking throttle and better response.

But now at 68,000 miles the throttle is starting to stick again, what the hell. That really ticks me off. Thats one thing i liked about the old TBI engines, the gas kept the throttle and whole intake real clean. Oh well i guess the power is worth it, lol.

Yep

A very good idea every 40K or so, especially if you have a 99 or 00 truck

What's the "BG stuff"? tell us what you did.

 it was just what the dealer had "BG" is the brand name, good products. The truck drives much diiferently than before i had cleaned it. I "TESTED" it and it has much faster throttle response and increased fuel economy. I also had a vibration that during idle would shake about every 10seconds. I also cleaned the iac valve and the engine responds better when i start it. it was the first time i cleaned it (92000km) although i did not have 3/16of an inch in there it was quite dirty.

highly recommended :P

make sure after cleaning to do the idle learn procedure.

The cleaning shouldn't be needed for 2002+ as the EGR gasses are the majority of contaniments entering the intake plenunm right behind the throttle body. 2002+ do not have an EGR. Although I understand the Duramax is going to have one, that'll be a mess to clean up.

Hmmmm, my 02' TB was coked up pretty good before I cleaned it. Fixed the surging idle issue instantly.

Just wondering...... ........What would happen if you took the hose off where it goes into the TB and capped it on the TB and put some type filter on the end of the hose? That way all of the dirty vapors would not be going into the TB. A long time ago, most engines had the valve covers vented to atmosphere. I know this would defeat the emmissions regulations :P , but could always re-connect at inspection time. :P

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
