I change my oil every 5,000 miles. I pull a 4,000LB trailer with my 2021 2500HD. I'm weighing around 13,000Lbs total, loaded, according to a CAT scale. I started to notice right after break-in period that the oil level would drop 1Qt every time I pulled my trailer a little over 1,000 miles. I used Pensoil Platinum Synth 5W30. After talking to a local performance tech that specializes in oil performance as well; at 20,000 miles, I decided to change my oil to Royal Purple High Perfromance just to see if I saw a difference. BIG difference. I am no longer burning oil. I have changed my oil twice with no loss. I just changed it a week ago at 30K, pulled my trailer from SE Louisiana to St Augustine, Florida, back and forth to Jacksonville twice and back to Louisiana; around 1,400 miles.... I might have burned 1cup. We're talking from JUST above the full line to the full line. The oil was checked with the truck level, cold each time I checked it. I need to add; even though the oil is probably the biggest culprit and YES, oil is a sealant in it's function and properties, but I also use nothing but Shell V Nitro premium fuel. They actually add a chemical modification that works with the oil, preventing oil degradation at the piston rings that help with wear protection. Check this video out for details on that: Shell even advertise that it protects against engine wear.  I would love to hear what you think.

Oil can certainly make a big difference. My cousin had a yacht with twin 8L GM gas engines. He was running the best grade Shell in them and one of them started consuming oil. He switched to Amsoil and problem solved. I've always run Amsoil in my skid steer with no problems and am thinking about changing my truck to it (currently running Kirkland). Oil is cheap.
