I am wanting to add a 3rd battery to on my 2022 Duramax. This battery would be mounted in the bed of my pickup inside my truck box. The purpose of this battery would be to power auxiliary items while camping without worrying about discharging the two starting batteries. The items would include:

- Inverter (800watts max) - Running/charging a laptop or TV, 120v air inflator for lake toys (i.e. tubes, stand-up paddleboards, etc) and/or running Traeger Tailgater Smoker (400watts for first 5 minutes, 50 watts to run).

- Air compressor - Viair 300P portable air compressor or future air-on-board air compressor

I'm thinking I'd run a positive cable from the alternator back to the battery. I'd have a breaker with an isolator inline within the engine bay. The battery will be mounted in a battery box that is vented out of the truck box. The inverter and compressor will be connected to the battery and mounted within the truck box.

Has anyone done this? Does anyone have comments, tips or tricks? Again, the purpose of this is to run items off the auxiliary battery instead of the main starting/running batteries.

Based on the loads you described I think you will be much happier if you go with a lithium (LiFePO4) battery and a DC to DC converter charger instead of a lead-acid battery.

To size the battery you’d want to estimate your daily energy usage and how many days you’d like to be able to go without running the truck to recharge.  One of the nicest accessories to have camping if you have the space and the power is a 12 volt compressor fridge, so consider adding that to your sizing calculations.

The DC to DC charger I’d recommend is the Victron Orion XS 50 amp charger.

Exactly what I would do. I have lithium batteries and the that same Victron XS DC to DC converter on my trailer.

Thank you guys for the input! I'm look into the Victron DC-DC chargers, and DC-DC chargers in general. I'm assuming these DC-DC chargers eliminate the need for an isolator and they manage charging rates to the battery dependent upon which battery I go with. If I decide to stay with a lead-acid battery, is the DC-DC charger necessary?

I'm just getting into this and don't fully understand all of the different options. There is so much more to adding a battery than I ever thought. Thanks for the help!

They have both smaller and larger ones available.

Haha... not what I want or need. I already have one of those if need be. Not looking to carry additional fuel (propane or gas) and my 3000 watt generator (Firman dual-fuel) in the bed of my pickup.

Even with a lead acid battery, I would get a DC to DC charger since you need to isolate it anyway.

There is NO way I would go lead acid for that battery. Lithiums are too inexpensive to not do.

I was thinking it would be better to run a little generator to recharge the battery instead of the dmax.

Quiet running and the idle down feature are nice.

I wouldn't haul my full size one around for that job either.

Ok. I'm thinking the same thing. I'll go with a lithium.

    • Seats matter a lot.  I would start there - good advise here.  I had a 2018 LT Colorado before my 2026 LT Silverado, and the seats are so much better in the new one it's not even a contest.  That was one thing I always hated about the Colorado and I owned two of them spanning 10 years - but I did it so I could park in the garage mainly.  Now I have a much larger property and a huge barn so I have plenty of parking options and a full size is more useful for maintaining the property and current hobbies as well.  I wasn't evenb thinking about the seats as part of the reason for the move to the Silverado, but after two back to back 700mile road trips I am sold on the LT seats w/ leather 100%.  The other LT features are also nice - one thing I really like is the power rear window on the back window by the bed.  And the lighting in the bed is also very nice to have - I doubt that comes on the lower models.  Power tailgate - also quite useful - it's a heavy slug!  What else - I could take or leave the screen - but heated seats and steering wheel and cruise control on the steering wheel is very useable - I would never want to live without that.  Even the colorados had that.
    • I think the ship has sailed on the fuel injection type - everything is getting direct now.  Does it help with mpg?  Not really and nobody buying a HD truck really cares anyway.  But that is what it is at this point.  Piston rings is something they may well adjust over time to get them right.
    • I don’t have detailed measurement data, but this past March we were hiking and camping in Death Valley and the Las Vegas area when this Spring’s heat wave hit with 105 plus temperatures and our 2021 L8T system kept our crew cab as cool as we wanted it (68F setting) with no trouble. Fan flows on auto once stabilized were fairly low. It seems like the OP’s system should be performing better.
    • Yes that's correct on the route to Durango - we just followed what google maps recommended.  That is quite the pass btw - very steep going back down.  I didn't even need manual mode - I just used cruise control and set the truck at 50 I think when it was a 45 posted speed and for the most part it just held it there by keeping it in the right gear - everyonce in awhile there is a sharper turn that I just braked for - but it was pretty smooth going down it on both sides.  Amazing views around there for sure - we had no real time to stop, were on the clock for a set-up time, but we did stop in some 2 horse town somewhere a couple hours oustide of Durango in the middle of nowhere for burgers.   And yes - lots up up and downs on the Durango trip but I think it's a big difference going 70 vs. going 80-83 with the aero in play with these big trucks.  Even the much smaller Colorado does reallt bad on gas going up over 70, I think I would have been lucky to get 18 on that trip in the Colorado honestly.  The full size is definately more comfy for a long road trip too, and the amount of gear we had would have meant two vehicles if I still had the Colorado.
    • I'm not sure what my temps were, but it would take my 2024 about 4-5 miles of driving before my AC started cooling. They replaced my compressor under warranty.
