Any comments about the 1500 clutch?

One of the forum members said that the clutch is the "weak point of our drivelines".

Any comments?

I'm a leftover from the "olden days", when clutches seemed to last forever.

No comments? Well I've heard noone else mention it. So I'm not going to worry about it. In any case, it should be a straightforward (aftermarket) upgrade if needed.

Thanks.

I had a 95 with 5.7L and 5-spd. I never had any trouble out of the clutch. We also have a 94 K3500 cab & chassis, you should see the bad boy clutch that thing has. Don't know, never heard of that.

I've got a 94 K1500 5spd, replaced the clutch and pressure plate last summer, pressure plate tines were bent an the clutch plate was shot,

Had about 130,000 miles on it. Mech fiqured it was the original clutch.

Hey Mongrel, what I meant when I said the clutch is the weak point in our drivelines is that the small clutch is the limiting factor in the towing capacity. The clutch themselves are not that bad, and you can expect to see a rather long life out of them, UNLESS you are doing lots of towing at or near max capacity and when moving around and slipping the clutch, like when spotting/parking a trailer, this will reduce the lifespan. I have heard first hand of people frying them in less than 50k, but I have heard many more stories of getting at least a 100K out of them. I expect to get at least a 100K out of mine, if I end up keeping the truck that long!

The NV3500 trans and clutch setup has been around for sometime and is pretty proven. I spoke to a guy on another forum last year before I orderd my truck. He worked at the plant that builds them in Muncie, (I think) he said the trans themselves are bulletproof and they beat the living hell out of them on the track to test em out!

He also told me 03 was the last year the NV3500 was being produced here in the states, all subsequent ones were outsourced to a Japanese company and made overseas! I am sure the quality is comparable, but I want my American built truck and its components made here in the US! Lord knows we have given away way to many manufacturing jobs!!

A final thought, I am considering selling my 03, you may be interested unless you have your heart set on the long bed and 4.10's I could most likely sell you my fully loaded 03 for the same or less than a new base model, plus mine has at least 3k in killer mods....I want a 3/4 ton!!!
