Sounds like a manufacturing issue as the cause per the recall is:

 

"Certain vehicles listed above may have improper lubrication of the rear axle assembly"

 

So to me, that would be something in the axle tubes was machined or cast wrong and not letting fluid flow to the bearings, or something was cast wrong in the center of the housing where the diff is and not letting the axle lubricant flow/splash properly to lube the pinion or side bearings.  

 

The repair is to replace the whole axle assembly.  No inspection procedure, just replace.  215 vehicles in new inventory on the dealer stock list.  Axles are SU8 supplier B so GM built, not AAM SU7 supplier A.

Can the 9.76 axle be either manufacturer? Or, are all these going to be 9.5`s?

9.5" can be either manufacturer.  9.76" is AAM only.  These recalled ones are 9.5".
