Magnaflow Catback Installed

Took a little over 2.5 hrs. to complete installation of Magnaflow catback system part number 15778, on an '04 Sierra Z71 4x4 ECSB. I did not use a lift or jack. Stock exhaust came out in one piece. After a few adjustments, fit and finish of the Magnaflow system is perfect. Sound is just what I was going for - mellow at idle, slight drone around 1,500-1,900 rpm's, and a nice hollow sound at heavy throttle. A few pics....note in the 4th pic that the muffler looks closer to the driveshaft than it really is. After slight adjusments, muffler is about 2-2.5 inches away, and is straighter than pic shows....

04blackZ71,

Looks good! :sigh: Once I get my truck, I plan on getting Magnaflow exhaust cat-back with dual rear exit with the 18" muffler.

My question is the installation. I know the cat-back system comes in stainless steel with lifetime warranty, but is it a bolt-on where you unscrew the factory exhaust system and bolt it right up? There are no cutting or welding to the pipes?

What kind of adjustments did you do the exhaust? Was it easy to fix? Thanks in advance!

Thanks. Correct, even w/ that dual outlet system, it will still be as simple as taking off the old (unscrewing the 2 bolts on the Y-pipe collector flange) and replacing the new. NO cutting or welding required. You'll have to install new hangers/grommets for the driver's side (which are supplied), but the truck frame already has pre-drilled holes - should be no problem. Magnaflow does recommend welding those nice tips you're gonna get when you decide on the proper location and fit.

In terms of "adjustments", the ONLY one I did was where the new intermediate pipe connects w/ the 2 bolts to the Y-pipe. I had a little trouble tightening them both down the first time, which caused the muffler to not sit totally straight at first. So, I loosened them up again, and began tighting both bolts intermittently until everything lined up perfectly. I've done other installs of catbacks before on other vehicles, and I was surprised just how easy this one went, and how well the fit was.

Nice truck! I bought the same cat-back for my 2004 GMC Sierra Z71, just waiting to put it on. I dont know why Magnaflow doesnt use double walled tips so they dont have to run the 3" pipe all the way to the end of the tip. Did you notice any performance or gas mileage differences?

Thanks. I think you will be pleased with it. I really haven't noted any huge performance increase, but if I were to base it on "feel" alone, I'd say there's more response in the higher rpm's than before. Improved gas mileage is also a tough one to report, since really it's been getting better ever since I purchased the truck - to date, I only have 1,400 miles on it. Let us know how the install went and how you like it.

Looks good! I've got the exact same system on my '03. Love the sound. I don't get any better mileage, but that probably has something to do with the fact that having the exhasut only encourages my right foot more :P

I'm surprised you were able to get the old one out in one piece. My Dad's putting one on his '04 Avalanche this weekend or next, we'll have to see if we can't figure out a way to do the same.

EDIT: BTW, if you notice a little rattle, there's a heat shield under the most foreward part of the headpipe that it might be coming into contact with it. Use a 1-lb lateral accelerator to make the heatshield geometrically compatible with the headpipe if required (a.k.a. beat it with a hammer ).

I just installed my cat-back system today, took me about 1-1/2 hours... Taking the old system off was easy and so was putting the new one on but lining everything up and making sure I had enough clerance between the driveshaft and spare tire in the rear was time consuming but got it set-up pretty good. I forgot to take pics while it was on the lift but heres a coulpe shots. By the way, the system sounds GREAT!!! Theres a little drone on the expressway but nothing I can't get use to. Wide open throtle sounds sweat as hell! Just wanted to write how it went.

GMCSierra04,

Thanks for your input on your exhaust system. I am getting the exact same truck as yours but mine will be in 2wd. It will be in Ext. Cab, Silver Birch Metallic, SLE, with bucket seats and center console, towing package, and 5.3L V8. I already bought the chrome mirror inserts and will be adding cat-back Magnaflow dual rear exit, GM bed rails protector and Line-X spray on bedliner. Hopefully it will be in my driveway next month!

I just got the Line-X done last week - it is awesome! Went w/ over-the-rail, and they did a great job.

Nice! I was just wondering how much did it cost to get over the rail setup?

I was planning on buying the OEM molded bed rail protectors then get the LineX spray underneath the bedrails and tailgate protectors.

As for the 16" rims, I'm going to find out how much it will cost to swap the 16" to the 17" rims/tires like yours.

By the way, whenever you have time, can you take some pics of your truck? I would like to see the whole truck in side and angle views. You don't have to do it if you don't want to. When I get my truck, I will definitely post pics on here.
