when is the nhtsa.gov going to make drls and automatic headlights mandatory on all motor vehicles hopefully soon.

I agree with the DRL's but I personally hate the auto headlights. First of all some of them you can't turn off. A reason why you need to turn them off is when you are getting on a ferry at Port Aransas,TX it is against the law to have your headlights on when driving on to the ferry. Also you would want them off when entering a camping ground at midnight, if you have ever been awakened in a tent by headlights then you know what I mean.

 

-My dad had an issue about this with his 2000 Z71, he went round for round with GM to have them put some sort of switch on there where he could turn it off. All the dealer would tell him is he should be able to press the dome button 4 times and they would turn off. That never worked, and neither did the parking brake, and finally GM told the dealer to go ahead and program that function into the computer so you can turn them off. But the thing is it took about 3 months to finally have GM do soemthign about it. Actually thinking about it if you started the truck with parking brake set then released it enough to drive but not far enough to turn on the headlights then that would do it

 

Plus the auto headlights makes people lazy, my dad has since sold that Z, and he got a ram which doesn't have them, anyway to get to the point, he was used to the auto headlights and still forgets to turn on his headlights right before it turns dark. But if they all had them then blah blah blah.... what if someone is driving an older vehicle which a lot of us do, when they are used to driving a new vehicle.

 

Granted, the ones now have easier ways to turn the lights off, but I don't see why people have to be lazy..

at speeds less than 20 miles an hour you should be able to turn the lights off if needed, at campground, or when deer hunting, i have heard that deer get spooked by lights and run away. but at speeds greater than 20 miles an hour the drls/regular headlights & taillights should turn on and stay on. in chicago a drunk driver was speeding down the expressway going the wrong way! with no headlights on!! and hit a car head on killing 3 young people in their 20s a true story i also see vehicles pulling out of brightly lit areas at night and forgetting to turn their lights on. and someone trying to evade police will turn their lights off to avoid getting caught.

Can't turn them off in my Blazer at any speed. The park brake works, but you have to set it BEFORE you start the vehicle and as soon as you release it the lights come on so it really doesn't help for most situations. I used to hate DRLs, but I can live with them now, I don't mind them and I like my automatic headlights OK, but I HATE the fact that I can't turn them off when I want/need to, you should be able to switch them off when needed.

A 20 cent 2.2 K ohm resistor shut off the auto headlights on my 99 Sonoma.

I had a pontiac van once that had a fuse for the DLR that I removed & was able to use the lights like in the old days...I hate the idea if its raining or near dusk I dont know if they are on or off yet...I'd rather have all the control....
