Mine has been pretty funky right from new. I nearly have to slam it down hard to get it to stay closed. Opens ok though.

I have the same problem, center console lid latch almost impossible to open lid. I pried out the coin tray latch assembly and found all looks good except for the eraser looking thing laying in bottom of latch. I have looked and searched lots of boards and have only found the 'rip off' sites trying to sell an answer. Seems to be a common problem with the latch. One link mentioned the eraser prevents the latch from closing when the lid is up, I have tried to figure this thing out and do not see what to change to make the latch work. Getting a new latch would not seem to help as I would still have to address the eraser item laying in the tray...Has anyone else solved this problem? I did not find any debris in the latch area, perhaps I will just clean it totally and drop some lube in tray and try to reassemble it....Anyone?

 Here is the answer to my own question, the eraser looking thing is a rolling lock. When the third seat is lifted to the vertical position to use the seat, the eraser rolls into a locking position so the lid does not open by accident. My latching mechanism came out by prying both ends of the coin tray. The broken part was a tiny plastic pin that restricts the latch button movement. I used a small drill to drill out the pin base and threaded in a small machine screw to take the pins place. It works great...Hope this helps someone else!

Yeah, I've owned 5 GMT-800's and all but 2 of them had a problem with the latch. And +2 on ripping of the plastic button. I've had to readjust to having on that actually works. I prefer no button.
