Gas Guage

My guage drops to empty and the light comes on when I sit idle for more than a few seconds. Pops right back up when I get moving again.

 

Took it to the dealer - its just the fuel level sender - turns out its not covered in my extended warranty - dammit - so they give me the price $745.00.

 

For one friggin sender. YIKES !

I've got a 2000 Z-71 that has the same problem, and work w/ a guy who had a 1999 that did the same thing.

 

I wonder how much the part is and how difficult it would be to install?

I had the same thing go out on my old truck, however my GMPP covered it under warranty. Which warranty do you have?

Ancient problem, there are tons of threads about this here.

 

There is a known problem with the sending units on the 99+ pickups. GM should really recall this, but we all know better...

Yep, mine too. Goes to empty and then jumps to full, or takes a long time to go to full when I fill up. If anyone knows if its something we can do ourselves it would be great.

From what I've heard about the fuel gauge sending unit (located in, and part of the fuel pump), you need to drop the tank, un hook all the wires and connectors (fuel line), and remove the entire unit, and replace it.

 

I'm pretty sure the unit goes for around 300 or 400 bucks..... sucks, I know...

 

Maybe GM-Parts Direct has it for cheaper...

mine started going to empty at 85,000 the reason its so expensive is it includes the fuel pump, pull the bed and change it your self , thats what im going to do!

my uncle was telling me a few months back that you didn't have to replace the fuel pump. you can just replace the fuel guage sending unit it snaps onto the side of the fuel pump some way.and they ran about 80.00 for the sending unit.i'm not 100% on these details but you can check around.my uncle by the way was service manager for my local chevy dealer for 30+years.
