bout to hit 60k.....

my front breaks are about toast....going to change the pads and get new rotors. i was very pleased witht the factory products. is it worth spending the $$ and buying oem parts? or should i go to the local auto zone and get their stuff? i am also going to change plugs/wires. the wires aren't bad but the plugs looked like they'd seen better days. i figured i'd just do both sice i was in there. the plugs are ngk from the factory so i guess i'll get those again....has anyone changed to a 8 or 9 mm wire? i really don't think it would be worth the extra $ but if you can give me a reason why i should, then please let me know. i took my k&n off last night when i was checking everything out and it is ready to be cleaned too. i noticed the maf screen was almost black! i can only assume the wires are dirty too, so i am going to get some electronic parts cleaner and give it a good bath too. last thing is the fuel filter, guess that never hurt to change every 30k. i would appreciate any tips or ideas on what brand to buy. thanks!

I, too, am about to roll 60K on my 2002, and here is the list of things I have planned to change out and the frequency of which I have done them in the past:

Transmission Flush (Every 30K)

Front and Rear Diff. (Every 30K)

Transfer Case Fluid (Every 30K)

Fuel Filter (Every 30K)

Wipers (Every 30K)

Air Filter (every 15K)

Tire Rotate/Balance (Every 5K)

Change Oil (Every 3K)

Clean Throttle Body (Never Cleaned)

PCV valve (never changed)

Cabin Air Filter (never changed)

I also plan on washing the truck with Dawn dish soap to strip all the wax, using a clay bar on it, and then re-waxing with Meguiar's Gold Class. I am also going to get the engine detailed (something I have never done!) - it is pretty dirty.

I am still on the original brake pads. I am having no problems with squeaking, etc. and they still are real solid. I do get a slight vibration when slowing down from high speeds, but I will get the rotors turned when I change out the pads. I wouldn't see a problem with going to Autozone and using their pads.

Is there anything else I should add to my list from above? I am already in the process of gathering the necessary parts to do all of this.

How much Dawn do you use for it to strip the wax? What does the clay bar do?

Have you ever washed your truck and then ran your hand across the paint when it was dry? Most likely it didn't feel clean and smooth,because of contaminants on the paint. There are all sorts of airborne contaminants that land on your paint,and washing won't take them all off. Thats where the clay bar comes in. You use the clay bar to remove the stuff the car wash won't remove. You can find them at any auto parts store,in the cleaning section.

I just got done detailing my 99 Silverado.

I used the clay bar about two years ago once (after my father sprayed the concrete driveway with Thompsons seal, and got half my truck too).

Since then, I've only used the Mothers 3 Phase approach

Phase I - Pre - Wax Cleaner - after I wash with Dawn, it takes off the rest of the wax left behind

Phase II - Sealer / Glaze - hides swirl marks and slight scratches (a must for a black or dark colored truck).

Phase III - Liquid Carnauba Wax ( I substitute a local wax here, called Collinite, hard as nails, but with an electric buffer to pull the wax off, its not too bad).

Took me about 4 hours to do, but I only do it twice a year.... well worth it, looks better than new

Just got my '04 and I plan on keeping this thing until it drops, so I'm looking to keep it in tip top condition.

I went ahead and ordered the Simoniz package for both the interior and exterior that puts a Teflon coating on it. More info here.

Did I do the incorrect thing? It's not scheduled to go into the shop to get completed until Tuesday. Was this just a sham? It wasn't that expensive (couple hundred). I figure it's at least worth it for the cloth interiour, especially with a two year old.

I have always wondered how to take care of these new vehicles with clear coats, etc...
